When the Wheeling Observatory was founded in 1881, it was one of the largest in the United States. It remained operational until 1966, and its collection of optical equipment and instruments is now part of the University Museum at Wheeling. The observatory played a significant role in American astronomy during its early years, and its telescopes were used to help survey the sky for objects such as planets and asteroids. Over time, Wheeling's observatory grew into a major player in American skywatching, thanks to its excellent telescopes and library which held many scientific papers from across America. In 1966, when the university closed down due to budgetary constraints, much of the museum's equipment and archives were lost in flames. However, a few years later an agreement was made between local philanthropist Cecil Blease and then-University President Everett Sanger to preserve Wheeling's astronomical heritage by donation. With new funding from Blease and Sanger, restoration work began on both the observatory itself (including extensive renovation of their research building) as well as various associated buildings around town. Today, Wheeling has once again become a center for astronomy education with world-class facilities that allow visitors to experience some of America's most important telescope collections while also learning about some of America's earliest astronomers!
