Wheeling is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling– Clarion City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first human beings to set foot on what is now Wheeling were white settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee, who arrived in the early 1800s. The area that became Wheeling was first known as "Natchez" because of its abundance of Natchez Trace tobacco and other crops. In 1814, Colonel James K. Polk sent General Andrew Jackson into this area to build a road from Pittsburgh through Kanawha County and into Ohio so American expansion could be rapid and secure. As construction went along it became evident that there was an even larger open space to the east which would become known as Wheeling due to its rolling hills and rich soils. Jackson named the new town after his favorite generalps George Washington Porter (1762-1848), who had been with him during the Creek War (1813-1814). The first school inWheeling began operations in 1816 under teacher John Fenton but soon changed hands several times until Drury School opened in 1830 adjacent to what are now Old Main & High School buildings on State Street between Market and Joseph Streets. By 1840, many stores, churches, hotels and other businesses had been built around what are today First National Bank Building (Old Main) on State Street between Market and Joseph Streets; Merchants Trust building on present day Second Avenue between North streets; Zion Baptist Church (present day First Baptist Church) on North avenue between Third street and Fourth street; Presbyterian Chapel on present day Fifth Avenue between North streets; Union Stock Yards near present day Patton Avenue; Agricultural Society building near present day Park Avenue near currentday Potts Mill Road In 1847 much of what is now downtown Wheeling was destroyed by fire resulting from a spark while being lit for illumination by local farmers during a corn measurement drive when some cows got out of control. This event helped spur development within downtown areas including: The opera house/theatre on State street opposite Court House Square where shows such as "Ferryman's Wharf", "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow", "Palladio" were presented nightly throughout most of the 1860s before moving uptown to larger venues like Masonic Temple which still stands today A year later another large fire destroyed much of downtown but not all wheeling burned including: Stonington Hotel where President Ulysses S Grant stayed in February 1865 during his Appomattox Campaign trip also known as “Black Tom’s Cavalcade” also destroyed were many warehouses used for storing goods prior to railroad arrival It wasn't until 1881 when water supply limitations resulted in stations being built along Pulaski creek at Depot Square across from court house squaregridlock preventing transportation completely spoiling then becoming quite popular despite high prices associated with upholstery services . Priorities shifted once more towards railroads with Station Square becoming most developed area until supplanted by newer gridlocked districts over time Church District includes both First Methodist Church (built 1869) located just southwest side of current Business Center district boundaries west off market square west off state street next door original courthouse north side old jail south side west end business center east end court house square . Most notably home of briefly headquartered Confederate Government for 2 months 1861-63 when Manchester took over following Battle Of Manassas Junction
