Wheeling is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Blair County. Wheeling was founded in 1819 by Daniel Boone and became a city in 1902. The first settler in what would become Wheeling was John Fenton, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky on December 12, 1819. He built the first permanent home in what would become Wheeling. The land for the city was purchased from James Knox by George Washington and his family during their crossing of the Ohio River on October 15, 1821. The original street grid for Wheeling were based off of that of Cincinnati, Ohio which had been developed as a proto-city around this time. In addition to its role as county seat, Wheeling also served as an important transportation hub due to its location on American Routes 30 and 21 between Pittsburgh and Richmond (then part of Virginia). In 1902, when Waverly Hillquit annexing Blair County made it possible for Wheeling to secede from Blair County and form its own separate government, Mayor Aiken proposed construction of a new courthouse complex that would be one of the most impressive ever erected in central west Virginia. The cornerstone for the current structure was laid on November 10th, 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt while he toured western America before his inauguration as president four days later. At that time west Virginians were celebrating their centennial year following successful efforts led by Mayor Aiken to unite their community into one entity during 1890–1892 under then-Governor Wise's administration under which all local governments within Blair County were consolidated into one agency known as "the Board". Despite being inaugurated only four days after predecessor Benjamin Lincoln's death less than two weeks prior due to conflict with railroad strikes throughout much of eastern US at that time such as Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co., Roosevelt fully endorsed Mayor Aiken's endeavors becoming one of his earliest supporters outside OFCCE territory - something which he would maintain throughout his entire career including service as both governor (1901–1903) and president (1945–1949). Upon taking office even though newly elected Ulysses S Grant had already resigned en route to campaign against Thomas Ewing Woodrow Wilson for president because Grant felt Wilson represented too much internal change within OFCCE - instead choosing instead fellow New York Democrat Grover Cleveland - Roosevelt quickly greenlit plans for construction just months after taking office despite some key objections from senior military officers living within OFCCE who saw little need or benefit to taxpayer funded infrastructure projects when supplies constant rail traffic could easily be handled better through existing roads/freeways available closer to production sites across America rather than having Boulevards lined with expensive new architecture + Taxpayer funded infrastructure Downtown like many other large cities across America at that time . What followed are some truly iconic structures / landmarks located within or surrounding downtown Wheeling today including: Bankers Trust Tower – located directly across Main Street from City Hall; Union Carbide Company Building – located adjacent to Carnegie Library; Masonic Temple – now home to Western National Insurance Company; First Presbyterian Church – now home 1st BaptistChurch; Elijah Muhammad Mosque – now home to Muslims United For Separation Of Church And State; etc…Today’s downtown offers vast amounts shopping opportunities not found anywhere else within radius including excellent Vietnamese restaurant called “Noodle House” just down Main Street from City Hall complete with an outdoor seating area overlookingMain Street where locals can enjoy breakfast sandwiches or lunch dishes while watching cars go by; well-preserved antebellum homes along side Main Street corridor which offer fascinating insights into life back then including slave quarters currently used by Easton University students studying history; etc…It should be noted however that although many aspects have changed over the years most importantly downtown has remained essentially unchangedLanguage spoken here includes English but often includes various dialects depending upon economic conditionsBackdates provided include events/locations described below unless otherwise noted
