Wheeling is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,208 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. Wheeling was founded on July 3, 1814 by Nicholas Wills and others as a post office named Velma. The name was changed to Wheeling on December 8, 1820, after the Battle of Whittier Creek near Wheeling Bridge. On November 15, 1868, Wheeling became the capital of West Virginia following its incorporation as a state within the Union. The first permanent buildings in what would become Wheeling were log cabins built by Nicholas Wills and his friends from Wrightsville in 1814-15 under the direction of then-Governor John Tyler. Wills believed that this would be an opportunity for him to show his citizens how well he ran the government from home while also getting some much needed rest and relaxation during long winter months back East. Unfortunately for Wills and his friends who had helped build these structures, they burned down during a severe winter storm on October 14th, 1816 while they were still being built! In revenge or maybe out of boredom (whichever you choose), NicholasWills started naming his new town "Velma" after one of his old business partners from their earlier interactions - James McMillin! Unfortunately for Velma's namesake town founder/renowned for starting all sorts of businesses with little more than bartering services however something didn't quite work out: both towns failed to gain much traction with residents until about 1840 when transportation became available to everyone through what is now Interstate 63 wide open just southwest of Wheeling! This allowed people living outside of Velma to come and trade goods (and sometimes sex) with those living inside which created some pretty strange dynamics over time... but overall things worked out pretty good so I guess that's something? Wheeling wasn't really established as a city until approximately 1865 when it annexed portions of nearby Clarksburg including most notably Dutchtown which later became known as downtown Clarksburg. businessmen decided early on that higher populations density along main streets made sense so they started developing CBDs or central Business Districts where many stores could be located at once making it easier for customers to find everything they needed without having to wander around aimlessly trying different directions looking for something specific! Residents today often refer to this type of development as "downtown." In 1870-71 there was another significant event when General Robert Ewing arrived in West Virginia and purchased land east side pike near present day Petersburg from Landon Carter Sr., becoming one of only two Ulysses S Grant Governors ever appointed directly from Washington D C rather than through appointment by either President Andrew Johnson or Vice President Chester Arthur! This event helped set off what has been called "the great manufacturing center period" in Wheeling which lasted until about 1925 when World War II finally intervened! Afterward Bethlehem Steel Corporation came into existence making heavy industry unavailable in EasternWest Virginia forever!!!
