Wheeling is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 12,854 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. The name "Wheeling" comes from the Potomac River, which forms much of its eastern border and flows through it. The first permanent European settlement in what is now West Virginia was by French traders on the Monongahela River in 1753. They named their trading post Fort Duquesne after Louis Duquesne, a general in the American Revolutionary War and one of George Washington's generals. The first white person to live permanently in Wheeling was James Fenton who arrived with his family from Maryland during the 1830s. In 1805, President James K. When he reached Wheeling, he learned that many people there were also immune to smallpox; however, he decided not to risk further exposure among so many people without knowing for sure if they were safe. He instead made arrangements for a convoy of gunboats led by Commodore John Dickson to cross into Lake Erie through Erie shallows on July 10th 1805 and arrive safely at Port Royal Island off Georgian Bay on July 11th; this event marks the beginning of modern North America as we know it today For over 200 years following its founding as a town within Logan County (then part of Jackson County), Wheeling has been strategically located as one of central points for commerce and transportation between rich agricultural valleys ringing Logan County eastward and westward across Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains – all served by roadways running directly parallel or intersecting each other – providing easy access both northbound (to Pittsburgh) via Huntingdon Valley eastward past Cumberland Gap Junction northwest past Ephrata Junction southeast past Antrim Junction northeast onto I-79/I-81/U.S.-Canada Highway( later I- 81 ), while also serving as a “hub” city connecting these various areas economically, socially and politically The growth associated with major industrial developments such as coal mining began well before World War I when entrepreneurs leased land parcels around Parker Coal Mines #1 on what is now First Street just south of Main Street in 1865 In 1912 Wm Ginter & Sons built an electrical substation adjacent to Railroad Park Avenue that became one of world’s largest electric power generation facilities . This then gave rise to another nickname for Wheeling - “Electric City” From 1922 until 1958, when National Broadcasting System affiliate WVUE transferred its signals from WPBT (channel 7) transmitter atop Mountaineer Peaks northwest corner First Street NW topiary park location into rebuilt new studios inside former Army Ammunition Plant on Taylor Hill Road SW around 1945 until 1955 due largely because NTS owned channel 9 & 10 since1920 which WTOV moved every 5 years or so next door FM dial signal exchange
