The current city government was organized when Mingo County was created in 1902 and Mr. Wirtz served as its first mayor pro tem until 1911 when he was elected to office full time In 1913 construction began on what is now Riverfront Park which would later become one of West Virginia's largest tourist attractions In 1917 General George Washington visited Weirsonton while en route to battle against Germany In 1924 Third Infantry Division Commander First Lieutenant John Tipton headquartered at Fort Knox near Weirton took command of all American forces west of the Mississippi River during World War II In 1951 General Electric merged with other companies forming GEICO On November 2nd 1965 local residents voted 1-2% into incorporation as an unincorporated community known as "WeirTON" effective December 15th 1966
