When White Democratic Party nominee Horatio Seymour lost his bid for Congress in November 1876, some residents decided not to reelection under Republican rule and formed a new party which they called "The National Union." This party advocated for more integration into white society as well as increased regulation of local businesses by state officials; however they received little support from either political faction and ceased operations shortly afterwards due to lack of funding or membership span
