Weirton, West Virginia is a small town located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Weirton is the county seat of Monongalia County and has a post office with the ZIP code 18214. The first people to live in what is now Weirton were Native Americans. The first white person to live in what is now Weirton was Major John Cavanaugh who settled in 1770 on land that he had purchased from the Cherokee nation. The village of Weirton began to be established as a community in 1834 when James Ketchum and his family moved from Ohio into Monongalia County to purchase land here. In 1835, Wm Hargrave erected a store and tavern near the present-day Central High School which became known as “the old mill” because it processed flour for local merchants. A post office was established at Weirton in 1840, and by 1850 there were six stores & three hotels open within the limits of present day Weirton. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order creating Monongalia County undersecretary of state for public lands Isaac Bickford. This order provided for the sale of 160 acres (60 ha) of forested land east of Morgantown to Union Carbide Company for $4 million dollars which would serve as a site for a new manufacturing town called Weirton my Fort Fairfield Planation adjacent to Morgantown Iron Workshops on State Road 3W between Weirton & Fort Mill on State Road 2N across from Greenbrier Resort Park (now White Sulphur Springs). The company transported construction materials overland throughJefferson National Forest and built roads leading upriver along Donelson Mountain until they reached their destination about 10 miles (16 km) outside Weirton where they unloaded their equipment onto a flatboat and drove inland before starting another road trip back downstream again over Donelson Mountain all the way back home! On July 9, 1865 while Union Carbide Company was still building their plant at Weirston my Fort Fairfield Planation, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his famous raid into West Virginia during which he burned most of Morgantown including Brown’s Store & blast furnace complex leaving only unburned ruins standing today – one can still see these remains from atop then current day Interstate 77 just south of Greenbrier Resort Park! After burning down most of Morgantown it seems likely that this raid did more than simply destroy property; it may have also served as a warning or example to other Confederate forces planning similar raids throughout Appalachia against Federal installations! It was not until after World War II that we started seeing evidence that Union Carbide Company may have also been involved with chemical warfare; studies conducted by Universityof Michigan chemist Leo Szilard revealed evidence consistent with chlorine gas being used during World War I production at our plant!
