The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store was opened in 1840. The name Weirton was chosen because it was pronounced "Werth-eton". On October 15, 1860, President James Buchanan signed an act creating Webster County; Weirton became its seat. Weirton is a small town in West Virginia, part of the Wheeling-Steubenville metropolitan area. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. Weirton is home to the Weirton Steel Plant and the Weirton Paper Mill. The first settler in what is now Weirton was Elias Weir, who arrived on July 4, 1786, while surveyor George Washington was on his way to defend Jamestown from British attack. In 1808, John Witherspoon settled in what is now southeastern corner of town and became one of its most prominent citizens. He served as delegate to the state convention that framed the Constitution of West Virginia in 1861. Witherspoon also founded an academy for young men in 1814 and donated land for a library in 1819. In 1865, when West Virginia seceded from Ohio, Weirton became part of Kentucky; but soon afterward it reverted back toWest Virginianan jurisdiction under a new constitution enacted by its residents at a meeting on December 6th, 1865. The paper mill built by James PemberTON was one of the earliest industrial plants west of the Allegheny Mountains and quickly became one of WBVA's most important employers. For many years it produced almost all paper products used withinWBVA - including newsprint, flyers, signs and banners - as well as stationery and other miscellaneous items such as carvings and lithographs. It closed its doors for good around 1984 after years of decline due to automation bybelieveing that overproduction had created too much competition which made prices too high for their customers
Weirton was founded in 1795 by George Weir and his family. The town passed through many changes during its early years, including being part of the Virginia Colony before it became a Federal Territory in 1801. In 1838, Weirton became an incorporated town and served as the seat of government for West Virginia until 1861 when it relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. In 1865, Weirton rejoined West Virginia as the state's capital.
