In 1821, John Cordero set up a gristmill here which continued operation until 1893 when it was destroyed by fire. Weirton was founded in 1825 by Captain John Weir and his wife Nancy Ellis from Logansport, Indiana as a stop on their route between that town and Wheeling, West Virginia (then called York). They named their new community after General Edmund Randolph who had visited them there three years earlier while military governor of West Virginia during the American Civil War. General Randolph had been impressed with Captain Weir's mill and donated land for its construction on which the town now stands. The city of Lynchburg erected a monument to General Randolph in honor of him in 1922. As early as 1833, settlers began arriving from Kentucky and Tennessee looking for rich lands to settle near where the Ohio River met Pennsylvania's Allegheny Mountains. By 1840, there were over 50 dwellings along Main Street alone; many more were built over time around Tryon Lake and other natural features that make up today's town center: Main Street runs north-south through downtown; Broad Street runs east-west; Market Square stretches southward from Union Station across Tryon Lake; Spring Garden lies just beyond Tryon Lake on State Route 412 west of Livingston Avenue; Sixty-six miles (103 kilometers) of road connected central businesses with surrounding towns or villages through transportation systems such as stagecoaches, wagons, carts and railsroads including one running through downtown! By 1850–51 captain Weir had secured patents for his corn cribs (a type of brick oven), cotton gin ("the first light manufacturing industry east of the Mississippi") which he operated continuously until 1860 — two years before finally giving up operations due to lack of competition—and also patented improvements to his water system that made it possible for farmers throughout central Appalachia to generate electricity without any costly hardware or engineering research into how best do this! Captain Weirs’ heirs continue operating his heirs’ business enterprise still today – an agricultural marketing cooperative - making parts available worldwide for repair or replacement!
