Weirton is a town in southern West Virginia and the county seat of Bedford County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,362. In 1975, when Weirton became a city, it had a population of 605 people; today, the city has a population of 14,844 and is considered one of the most gun-friendly cities in United States. Weirton is home to two state-owned Arsenal missiles storage facilities which are used by the Army for testing and training purposes only. These locations are also home to many other federal government properties including: three juvenile detention centers (One houses juveniles from Columbine High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado; another facility serves as an adult prison for adults convicted of felonies or misdemeanors outside West Virginia; and another center house children adjudicated delinquent by parents or guardians), four branch libraries (two public library branches serve as dedicated resource centers that provide access to information about guns and gun safety while providing programming for residents), four fire departments (including one department with an arson response unit), six high school districts (one each serving grades 9 through 12) and twelve post office boxes.

It lies on the Kanawha River and is located east of Wheeling, west of Huntington, and north of Clarksburg. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Weirton were Scottish traders who landed there in 1688. In 1701, Captains John Campbell and Robert Ewing surveyed the area and named it for General James Monck (1661-1724), who had helped defeat Great Britain at Yorktown during the American Revolution. The name change came about because General Monck's troops burned down an old courthouse in Morgantown on November 12, 1701. In 1812, Major General Daniel Boone established a military post near present-day Weirton to protect settlers from Indian attacks. He named it Fort Boonesborough after himself and his friend Colonel John Boone (1720-1811). The fort served as a temporary Headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A year later, Fort Boonesborough was abandoned and its cannons moved to nearby Charleston Harbor where they remain today as part of that city's Defense Museum complex In 1855, George Washington turned 100 years old and was celebrated by local residents with a public picnic which included games, music and speeches by local officials including Mayor David Brody (1829-1915) The town started off as just two farms around what are now Main Street & Lower Market Street - both named Wernherston after early settler Isaac Weisgerber (1780-1837). By 1860 there were twenty families living here; by 1870 there were over one hundred families – more than half of whom were farmers A new schoolhouse was built in 1870 which became home to the first high school in Blair County In 1885 construction began on what would become known as "The brick Church", eventually becoming home to three churches: First Baptist Church (1886), Second Baptist Church (1902) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1910) After years of growth& expansion businesses opened up such as grocery stores/drugstores/restaurants etc., until finally when World War II forced many people out& away from town center due to fear being drafted into that war .afterward many people returned but some left again because life back then wasn't as good as it used to be

The name "Weirton" derives from William Weir who organized the township in 1814. The first permanent settler in what is now Weirton was George Washington Lewis and his family in 1784. Other early settlers included Captives James McGillivray and David White and their families in 1790; John Capps, Willard Holmes, Ebenezer Cobb, James Bigham and others in 1800; John Hinton and his family near present-day Wheeling on the Ohio River in 1802; Abram Beall near present-day Valley Forge on November 7th, 1807; Elisha Swayne with his family about 1840; Nathan Bedford Forrest about 1860. Michael Malone established a grist mill hereabouts on December 1st, 1800. A sawmill was built here by Honorable Amos Kendall on October 15th, 1827. The first store opened this side of the mountains by Elijah Fenton on February 20th of that year. The first post office was established at Weirton (now Liberty) on March 3rd of that year under the name Cedar Rapids to serve as a water supply for farmers living along the Ridge Road between Liberty and Mingo Counties (then unorganized). In 1865 Mr. Jno Prentice erected a commodious frame building which served as Post Office until it burned down September 21st following an unsuccessful attack byavers upon it while open day celebration being held therein! A new Post Office was finally erected on May 12th within three weeks of its erection! Of course we all remember “the old Post Offices” back then! By 1870 there were ten stores located herewith four operating daily as business increased rapidly due to railroad construction throughout this area!! In 1905 a state Normal School was established at Weirsville which later became known as Appalachian State University In 1918 there were two churches – First Presbyterian Church located just east of town off US 231 opposite Valley Forge National Park Service Headquarters Also founded in 1918 were Bethlehem Lutheran Church located west of town off US 231 near where today's KFC stands Finally Baptist Zion Chapel opened up northeast of town across from Valley Forge High School also operated by Baptists for many years before eventually coming under control of Jehovah's Witnesses (JWU) In 1951zheimer Hospital moved into its current location adjacent to Valley Forge High School . Today Weaverstown has over 100 businesses including several dozen employing more than fifty people providing services such as healthcare., law enforcement., manufacturing., transportation., retail shopping etcetera !! Weaverstown is not only home to some very large organizations but also offers plenty small businesses owners opportunity for success!!!

The first telegraph line from Pittsburgh to Weirsville was erected in 1838. In 1865, the railroad reached Weirsville and began carrying goods and passengers between Pittsburgh and Weirsville.
