The store was located on Market Street and it functioned as a stop for customers coming into town from Huntington and other areas east of the Allegheny Mountains. The American Armory Company closed its doors in 1892, but another company, the Western Gun Shop, opened up shop soon after. The Western Gun Shop was located on Main Street and it functioned as a local extension of the American Armory Company. This continued until 1912 when both stores were bought by J.L. Whitney & Sons (the current owners). In 1912, J.L. Whitney & Sons started producing their own magazines which they called “Weirton Magazines”. The company continued to produce these magazines until 1954 when they decided to switch to an all-metal construction style of magazine design instead of using rivets and nails for their magazines’ holding mechanisms. After leaving J.L Whitney & Sons, Weirton Magazine companies went through several different owners before finally being purchased by General Atomics in 1984. General Atomics kept these companies running until 2004 when they decided not to keep them going due to budget cuts that were made throughout the Corporation during that time period.
Weirton is a town located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,584 at the 2010 census. Weirton is the largest community in Monongalia County and the second-largest municipality in West Virginia after Wheeling. It is also one of two cities (the other being Huntington) in WV that are both served by the Tri-Cities School District. The area now known as Weirton was first occupied by Native Americans. The name "Weirton" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where we can hunt." In 1799, George Washington surveyed the land that would become Weirton and named it for General James Weirer, who had fought with Washington during the French and Indian War. The first settler in what is now Weirton was John Hinton. He built a log cabin on his farm near present-day Parkersburg on November 15, 1814. By 1820, Hinton's son Lewis had moved to what is now downtown Weirton from Greenbrier County and started an inn called the White Sulphur House which still stands today on Market Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. In 1830s George Prentice began marketing coal mined near present-day Parkersburg to local merchants for transportation to market in Wheeling; this led to the start of what would eventually become known as Tri-Cities Steel Corporation. During Reconstruction era (1865–1877), many black residents of Appalachia left their plantations for jobs opportunities in townspeople's homes or businesses such as those run by Will Rogers' father Barnett Rogers Sr., JW Carver & Son grocery store owner A C Greenwood (whose business closed down around 1915), WL Phelps tavern owner E G Bowen (whose building still stands there), L&H Harriman hotel manager Ira S Huntington & Sons truck stop restauraunt Fortunate Innkeepers Association president Marion Lester Garrison whose restaurant burned down on February 9th 1906). After Reconstruction ended most blacks left west Virginians for good because of Jim Crow laws which barred them from becoming citizens without white approval while they awaited trials or appeals related to their past actions or convictions; however some managed to stay until after World War II when race restrictions were lifted nationwide through executive orders issued by President Franklin D Roosevelt following pressure from southern whites removed through violence/ceremony such as Brown v Board of Education caserought before US Supreme Court). Many African Americans did return home during postwar years but integration efforts continued until about 1965 when all public facilities were integrated including schools across WV except Tri-Cities School District where black students continued to attend separate classes until Integration Day 1972 when all races were finally integrated into one school district under superintendent Lonnie Borenstein with more than 98% compliance statewide In 1870s James Weirer established a flour mill here which became Weirton Mills later part of American Flour Company The first post office opened here on October 8th 1850 West Virginia State University was founded here on December 1st 1865 In 1892 Druel Ritchie opened his general store on Main Street which became known as Ritchie's Drug Store In 1899 First National Bank opened its doors here In 1902 Isaac Asimov opened his Asimov Pharmacy here On September 10th 1929 there was a fire that destroyed most of downtown Weirton killing five people including Mayor Harry Warner On December 12th 1969 Union Carbide plant went up in flames creating one of deadliest industrial accidents ever seen in America causing over 270 fatalities yielding $6 billion economic loss
