Weirton is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Weirton was founded by James Weir in 1821 as a log cabin community on land acquired from the Cherokee Nation. The first store opened in 1830. In 1876, Weirton became one of four towns incorporated into Huntington when that county was formed from parts of Fayette and Randolph counties. The post office has been in operation since 1875. The primary industry in Weirton is manufacturing: textiles, plastics, food processing, building materials and appliances. Other significant sectors include education and research: Weirton School District has two high schools; University Park College offers Associate's degrees and certificates through its arts programs; and Valley View Technical Institute provides vocational training for men and women.

These creatures evolved from fish that walked on two legs but were unable to extend their arms fully because they had to use their fins as digits. This process helped these fish become able to walk on land where they could find food and avoid predators. New World osteopelagic vertebrates include alligators, lizards, dinosaurs, and other non-primate mammals who can walk upright on two feet like humans do. Weirton is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Weirton is part of the Wheeling–Erie metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Weirton was Captain John Gregg, who arrived in 1792 and named the site "West Point." He homesteaded land on the east side of Monongahela River near present-day Weirton. In 1824, Captain James Grafton bought two hundred acres (100 hectares) of Gregg's land and founded Grafton Station on the west bank of the river. This became one of the first commercial towns in West Virginia. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant established an army camp here to supply General William Tecumseh Sherman's march throughOhioandwestern Pennsylvania towards Baltimore City. After Sherman's victory at Gettysburg in July 1863, many soldiers and their families returned home to live in tents or small frame houses built by settlers around Grafton Station and other camps around town. Most of these homes were destroyed by a fire caused by Confederates during the Battle of Monongalia Bridge on July 2,1865. However, most residents quickly rebuilt following Union military occupation until early 1866 when General Robert Ewell captured government buildings and burned them down as part of his famous “Burning Bridges” campaign against Confederate forces throughout eastern West Virginia following Vicksburg Campaigns Operation Crossroads In 1876 local businessmen formed a company to build a canal across Monongahela River from Georgetown to Morgantown which would create an important transportation link between those two points in western West Virginia and Interstate 95 southward into Maryland. The venture failed but led to formation of American Canals Company with headquarters located at Weirton until its sale to Norfolk Southern Railway Company in 1913 Most recently there have been several efforts over time to bring water from mountain glaciers associated with Mount Washington National Park upstream through various canals leading into Ohio Valley forriver development including construction of Weirton Waterfront Trail completed May 2017; acquisition by Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) Authority grant for $193 million Project Callenwood – largest single infrastructure project ever undertaken within Allegheny County; major expansion plan approved by owners/operators which will include new shopping center & hotel opening late 2020s adjacent WV State Fairgrounds; beginning construction this fall on massive capital project – approximately $1 billion dollar replacement for aging infrastructure components along US 26 corridor connecting Pittsburgh & Erie PA
Weirton was founded in 1823 by George Weir and his wife, Sarah. The town became a thriving community with a population of around 100 people in the early 1800s. In 1847, Weirton became the seat of County government when it was created from portions of Mingo and Logan counties. The town continued to grow through the years and reached its peak population of over 500 people in 1925. By 1930, however, Weirton had shrunk to just under 200 people due to increasing competition from larger towns in nearby Boone and Monongalia counties. By 1935, Weirton had completely disappeared as a result of development around the town site. However, it is still commemorated as an important local community on West Virginia's history books.
