In 1957 and 1960, the United States Congress passed two acts which renamed various parts of Mineral County after American generals or political leaders: James Fenton's Creek City Act named for General James Fenton and Albert Sills' Valley Forge Act named for George Washington's Valley Forge encampment during the Revolutionary War. both Acts were signed into law by President Eisenhower on May 20th 1957 and received unanimous approval from Congress as part of his larger program to rename all 50 states Namesake Weeks legislation which he sponsored as part of his Great America agenda package in December 1955 . At first glance this seems like quite a coincidence but there are several reasons why these particular names were chosen: First off James Fenton had been killed earlier that year while serving as Commandant at Fort Mifflin (now Army Barracks) in Philadelphia so Valley Forge may have been more appropriate than anything else given that event’s importance within American history; secondly General Sills had long been popular among local residents for many years[2] and valley forge has become one of our most commonly used local terms]; finally there was growing sentiment throughout much of America beginning in the 1950s towards becoming moreSSLTically diverse[3] so geographical namingreflecting community interests rather then just official government pronouncements seemed like a good idea at the time." Widow of John Weirton (1790-1868) and son of James Weirton, the founder of Weirton, West Virginia. Mrs. Weirton founded the first Female School in Ohio in 1814 and was the first teacher in this area. The Weirsons were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and their homecoming service was held on November 12, 1851 at which time they were also the first such event to be held in that town. Weirton is located on the Kanawha River about 20 miles west of Greenbrier County seat Wheeling. It began as a small log settlement near where it now stands on land granted by George Washington to James Weirton for his father's Revolutionary War services. In 1792, John Weirton erected a cabin near present day Waverly for himself and his wife Rachelle (Fenton). They had three children: James who became an early settler in nearby Lewisburg; Mary who married Capt. Elijah Phelps, later commandant of Fort Knox; and Sarah who married Col. Andrew Jourdain commanding at Fort Donelson during Memphis Campaign (October 1784-January 1785). A few years later Fenton acquired 640 acres northwest of present day Weirton along the Kanawha River from Nicholas Boone under an agreement made between him and Washington while he was President George Washington's military governor over what is now western Virginia after British General Monck's victory at Yorktown ceded all but eastern Tennessee to France with terms that included becoming a protectorate equal to Spain or Austria when independence was achieved in these regions The land grant extended frompresent day Waverly eastward to just south of Loganville on Kentucky state line then northeast across Northumberland County line into Maryland before terminating near modern day Clarksburg Fenton died without issue around 1800 so control passed through purchase from widow by Captain Elijah Phelps until 1802 when Colonel Andrew Jourdain purchased additional 640 acres including today’s WeirTON from her . The first post office opened here on March 3, 1840 . Nearby Clarksburg started as a small trading post controlled by Mr./Mrs.(?) Beasley & Son prior to being taken over by government July 1st 1861 John Pemberhtone bought out Mr./Mrs.(?) Beasley within two years On April 12th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived here with 1,500 men en route for Greenbrier Valley Station ahead of what would become one of history’s largest army movements ever mounted only days after Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse leaving behind more than 9800 dead upon Buell’s surrender at Murfreesboro TN less than two weeks earlier ICONIC STATUE OF JOHN WEIRTON WAS erected here following ceremonies February 8th 1966
