Vienna is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia, and the county seat of Kanawha County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,717. Vienna is located on the Kanawha River at its confluence with the Ohio River. It is also bordered by Doddridge County to the west and Morgan County to the east. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Kanawha County were French fur traders who arrived in 1755 and named their new settlement after their capital city, Paris. The area that would become Vienna was part of Virginia until 1788, when it became part of Kentucky as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1825, Kanawha County was organized from parts of Doddridge and Morgan Counties; this formed what are now known as downtown Vienna and most of Parkersburg Township to the south-southwest edge of town along Main Street (now Unicoi Road). From about 1800 until about 1820 there were several attempts by English colonists to establish villages or settlements on Muskingum Creek near where present-day Canonsburg stands today because they believed that this creek would provide easy access to water supplies for their agricultural operations in northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. After failed efforts at a village on Muskingum Creek in 1821 and 1822, a group led by Captain John Stephenson established an early community called Fort Stephenson on April 12, 1824 near present day Stevenson's Ferry across Muskingum Creek from wherepresent day Washingtontown begins. The fort served as a trading post between Cincinnati (then known as Transylvania)olisand Kentucky until December 5, 1830 when it burned down due to lack of food storage capacity; however neither Stephenson nor his group lost any lives during its construction or burning process. In 1840 Nicholas Popejoy settled around one mile downstream from present day City limits in what would become known as Romeowne which he named after his native land Raphael’s Mill where he had been born some years earlier while still living with his family at Romeowne House near Winchester (now Winchester Beach). He started farming corn and beans on acres bought from David Fenton who had founded Roanoke Rapids just upstream from Romeowne House about two miles wide surrounded by low rolling hills dotted with cedar trees; other landowners included Jno..Fenton Jr., Ebenezer Brownell Sr., Abram Goodrich & others later developed similar plots around these core acreage boundaries over time producing large quantitiesof crops annually without assistance from market prices generated either through natural processes such as frost damage or pests/insects which frequently attacked those growing crops thereby damaging them; pricing abilities were provided primarily through marketing agents acting out of Constantinople (today's Frankfort) KY engaged in various business ventures dealing principally with transportation needs associated with raising commodities grown elsewhere including tobacco products shipped back home via riverboats bridge over Roanoke Rapids then unloaded on barges headed for Lexington/Frankfort markets thence distributed throughout eastern KY Via railroads drawing upon riverside sites along way providing Louisville/ Indianapolis Withhead markets loaded onto wagons drawn by horses then pushed downriver past Warsaw Junction before being unloaded at Wilmington Landing belowpresent day Castle Rock having previously passed through presentday Weirton belowRomeowne Commons prior enteringwhat are now Wadesboro Heights before reaching Blankenship River aboveBlankenship Bottom
