Vienna is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia and the county seat of McDowell County. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census, up from 11,876 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston metropolitan area. The city lies on the Kanawha River in central West Virginia near its confluence with the Monongahela River. The earliest known settlement in what is now Vienna was by traders from the Dutch colony of Utrecht-Riga-Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) in 1646; they named their new town "Wertherstadt" after Prince Maurice of Orange's brother and successor as Elector of Brandenburg, Rupertus Vytnius Werther. In 1736, George Washington surveyed this region for his father and found that it would make an excellent site for a military post; he founded Fort Necessity later that year on land purchased from John Blair and others near what would become downtown Vienna today. In 1811, General Nicholas Luckenwaldt built a fortification here to protect settlers against Native American attacks; it became known as Luckenwaldt's Fort. The first school in Vienna was chartered by Harper's Ferry residents on October 10, 1812; it became Potts' School District #1 shortly thereafter. In 1865, Vienna joined McKennan County as one of four counties created within Wheeling County when that county was divided into two parts following an election campaign between John Capps and Hugh McCulloch over control of local government services within Wheeling County proper. On November 7th 1860 - just days before President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating West Virginia - Vienna voters ratified a charter giving their new county government much more power than ever had been granted to any other entity within WV until then: unrestricted authority to levy taxes without consent from adjacent counties! For most Viennese citizens during this time period life revolved around farming or trade with nearby Kentucky & Ohio (the Ohio Valley), though there were some stone quarries located hereabouts supplying both Austria & Germany with rough limestone for building projects abroad as well as providing employment opportunities for many locals including many artisans who produced carved woodturning tools called “Viennese turners” which are still popular today among collectors across America

Vienna is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia, on the Ohio River. It was founded in 1786 by George Washington and named for the Austrian city of Vienna. The population of Vienna was 9,746 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Vienna was James Robertson, who arrived in 1786 from Scotland with his family. He built a log cabin on the present site of Greenbrier River Dam which he called "Robertson's Landing". In 1813, Act 7 of 1813 set aside a township west of Greenbrier for German-speaking settlers and renamed it "Vienna Township", after Austria's capital city. The village that developed around Robertsons Landing became known as "Vienna" after its founder's death in 1827. In 1848, Southwestern Coal Company organized a small town near Greenbrier to house workers engaged in coal mining and later production at Antimony Mines; however, this town never rose to much importance because coal mining operations were more important than developing it into a town. In 1861, Vienna Township added three blocks east of its original boundaries (to form Broadway) when East Berlin Township split off from Vienna Township and incorporated as an independent municipality separate from West Virginia but sharing someof its same borders including Broadway and Richards Lane/East Berlin Road/Richards Creek Drive area between those two municipalities). This move increased business activity centered around downtown where banks and businesses had been located since before white settlement began in what is now Western Pennsylvania After World War II ended hostilities ceased across much of Europe so many people returned home following Victory over Japan that housing developments sprang up all along Interstate 81 providing homes for those who could not find elsewhere to live or return home permanently once hostilities ended One such development was called Brookside which started construction adjacent to I-81 just north of Clarksburg while other developers built similar housing throughout western & eastern portions OfWest Virginia during this time period
In 1867, the town of Vienna was founded in what is now West Virginia by Mormon settlers. The Mormons were driven from Utah by Brigham Young's forces during the war of 1847. In 1865, the Eastern Electric Railway arrived in Vienna and began transporting goods between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. This led to increased trade between Austria and West Virginia, which contributed to growth in the town. By 1886, Vienna had a population of about 1,200 people and was home to two churches and a school.
