When Austria became an independent country again after World War I, it designated Vienna as its capital city and made it one of its primary commercial centers for goods exported to Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) through Prague Castle before joining Czechoslovakia proper in 1938 under Nazi Germany control. AfterAustria regained independence from Nazi Germany in 1945, Vienna reverted back to its Austrian name but continued to serve as a center for local commerce until 1978 when it lost all contact with other parts of East Central Europe due to communist rule following World War II. Rockefeller founded the steamboat company "Rockefeller Navigation Company" in Vienna and began shipping goods from that town to Huntington and other points in the coal-producing area of Central Appalachia. That same year, Vienna became part of the newly created Monongalia County and became a small industrial center with textile mills, rice mills, and a bakery. By 1915, when World War I began, Austria had become one of the most industrialized countries in Europe; however, its economy was badly hurt by war-related destruction and economic recession. Because of this situation, many Austrians fled their homes during wartime and many Austrian citizens served in Allied armies fighting on both sides of the conflict.
