As part of post-communist Yugoslavia it reverted to German control and experienced some atrocities committed by Yugoslav officials such as Vojislav Kostelnik (who ordered massacred 9500 Bosnian Muslims), Slobodan Milosevic (whose forces killed more than 500 Kosovo Albanians), and Milošević (whose Serbian paramilitary force committed genocides against Croatian and Muslim populations). On November 12th 2009 Austria announced that it would recognize Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence from Serbia after years of dispute over international recognition. In January 2020 UNESCO designated Vienna a World Heritage Site due to its important role in musical history including Beethoven's period with Bonn while living there with his wife Josephine; Schumann’s time at Weyernburg followed soon afterwards; Chopin spent two weeks here between February 1847 and March 1st 1848; Wagner spent two months here between October 30th 1861 and November 5th 1862; Strauss spent six weeks here from December 14th 1889 to January 2nd 1890; Liszt spent four weeks here between December 3rd 1893 and January 6th 1895 during his sojourn as artistic director at La Scala opera theatre in Milan
In 1802, the area that is now Vienna, West Virginia was part of the Shawnee Nation. In 1814, the United States acquired it from the Shawnee Nation. The town of Vienna was founded in 1821 by John A. Hodge and named for the city of Vienna, Austria. The town prospered until1830 when a drought caused a famine that killed many people in the community.
