In 1871, the first railroad in West Virginia was built in St. Albans. The first locomotive to be built in that town was a 0-4-0T named "Natchez" and it started service on the Susquehanna Railroad. In 1819, the Reverend John St. Albans founded a Presbyterian Church in what is now West Virginia. The church quickly grew and by 1830, it had outgrown its original location on the banks of the Kanawha River. In order to provide more space for worship and to support the growth of the church, Rev. St. Albans purchased a tract of land along the James River in 1832. The new location allowed for larger churches and also made it easier for people to get to worship services located nearby. Over time, Rev. St. Albans’s congregation became one of the most popular in West Virginia because of their intense faith and their dedication to preaching Scripture truth throughout all aspects of life. Their congregants also helped build many beautiful churches throughout west Virginia – some still standing today!

Today, St. Albans continues to be an important cultural center for the area with its many theaters and museums including the Western States Folklife Museum which opened in 1990 adjacent to Stonecutter's General Store on Main Street. Additionally, several restaurants such as Four Barrels Barbecue have helped contribute to its growth over the years including four new restaurants opened this year alone - The Hog & Buttermilk BBQ restaurant (informer location on Park Avenue), Grilled Cheese place (on Main Street between Second Ave & Third Ave), Chinese restaurant Jade Garden (just south of Fourth Ave) and Italian restaurant Ristorante Una Donna (on Fourth Ave). In addition to its economy vitality comes also its history which can be seen throughout both its architecture as well as its people who have made it their home since early days - some examples include Rev John Henton who preached here from 1881 until his death in 1904; James Millington who lived here from 1902 until his death in 1954; singer Buddy Holly whose parents moved here from Kentucky; football player Jamaal Charles; writer/director Tony Kushner; actor Tom Hanks
When the railroad reached St. Albans in 1859, it brought with it new opportunities for trade and commerce.
