The Battle of St. Albans took place on October 16, 1864, at a crossroads in central West Virginia, between Union and Confederate forces. The Confederates were led by General Ulysses S. Grant, while the Union forces were commanded by General Winfield Scott. The battle was fought as part of the American Civil War. In 1863, Union troops had driven westward from Nashville and Chattanooga into western Tennessee and Kentucky, seeking to drive Confederate army underGeneral Robert E. Lee out of the state. On October 15th, they reached the town of Saint Albans on the Rappahannock River near Harrisonburg. Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major-General John Custer to move against the enemy instead of waiting for reinforcements from nearby Fort Donelson; this decision doomed Custer's force when it was discovered that there were no more friendly soldiers available to support him. On October 16th 1864 Union Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer attacked a Rebel brigade under Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet at a crossroads known as "The Crossroads." Here tragedy struck: two brigades (the 2nd Kentucky Infantry and 3rd North Carolina Infantry) reported finding their way through knee deep snowdrifts onto a road bed leading northeast towards Winchester; only then did they realize that they had been ambush'd by three brigades strength (2nd Maryland Cavalry Regiment/1st United States Colored Troops), commanded respectively by Captain Samuel Tilden Beall with Colonel John Broughton commanding 1st USCT&A Volunteers stationed behind trees along roadside - his orders being to '
St. Albans is a small town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after St. Albanus, an 8th century missionary and saint who spread Christianity in that area. The first inhabitants of what is now St. Albans were the Lenape Native Americans who lived along the banks of the Allegheny River before European exploration began in 1607. In 1789, land west of present-day St. Albans was granted to John Armstrong by General George Washington for his military campaign against Native American tribes in what became Armstrong County. At this time, many farmers from southwestern Pennsylvania traveled to Mingo County to purchase land for their farms and town development started soon afterwards; some early settlers still live there today including Aloysius Lerner (founder of Lerner Drugs), Revsker Hoyer (a Methodist minister) and Drinker Mosely (the founder of Waco Oil). In 1814, when Kentucky became a state and Mingo County became Marshall County, most residents chose to stay within Mingo County or move out as it was considered more developed than neighboring counties with better soils and climate conditions – although some people did move into other nearby counties during this time period such as Greenbrier and Fairmont due to limited agricultural opportunities back then near Wheeling/Charleston city limits). When Marshall county was dissolved in 1876 it merged with Mingo County becoming West Virginia’s 85th county When coal mining ceased operations in eastern West Virginia following the 1970s recession all but a handful of mines closed leaving behind abandoned mineshafts throughout much of Appalachia which have been filled with water over time creating aghosttown called “Allentown” located on top of an abandoned mine shaft just outside Wheeling/Charleston where today you can find water moccasins left by past miners dating back to 1872! Today St. Albans features several stores including CVS Pharmacy & Walmart as well as restaurants such as KFC & Papa John's Pizza dotting its streetscape making it feel like home again despite having only 1 square mile!
