Gun sights history in St. Albans, West Virginia began with the construction of a rifle range by the United States military in 1881. The range was located on present day US Route 27 and was used to test rifles and artillery. In 1903, the first use of telescopic sights occurred at the rifle range when officers and enlisted men were able to aim their weapons using a telescope that had been provided. The use of telescopic sights quickly spread throughout the American military, and they soon replaced traditional iron sights as the standard sighting system for firearms. In 1917, an armory was built on State Road 7 in St. Albans which served as home to both local arms dealers and U.S forces stationed in Europe during World War I. During World War II, gun sights were again standardized when Jorgensen-type aiming devices became available for infantry rifles which allowed soldiers to target specific targets with accuracy far beyond what could be achieved with traditional iron sights or telescopes. The first gun sights in St. Albans were a simple black and white bead on wood sight set up by Captain James A. Ferguson in 1814. The Ferguson guns were used to target practice at the fort. In 1825, Captain John Sutter erected a more sophisticated design using iron sights which became known as the Sutter Rifle Sight. This sight was later replaced by a better one in 1859 with the installation of an enameled dial for easy adjustment. St. Albans, West Virginia is a small town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Kanawha County and its only borough. The community was founded in 1868 by Englishmen who had come to work on a canal project near this location. In 1902 it became an agricultural town and then an industrial town after major coal mining operations were established there in the 1920s. After deregulation of the American economy in the 1990s, St. Albans experienced a resurgence as a center for arts and culture in the 2000s. The original German Lutheran church built here by settlers in 1868 remains one of the few remaining churches from that time period in West Virginia and is now used as a museum. The first Baptist church was built here also but it burned down soon after being erected. A new Baptist church was erected here around 1924 and remains standing today as one of St. Albans' most popular tourist attractions! The old mill which once stood here has been demolished but its foundations remain extant as part of downtown's Historic District. Today, St. Albans is home to many businesses and professional organizations such as law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, health care facilities, etc., making it an important local destination for locals and visitors alike!
