St. Albans, West Virginia is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County and the largest community in the unincorporated area which includes portions of Kanawha and Monongalia counties. The first St. Albans settlement was established on January 12, 1800 by two men named George and James Smith. The original site was on what is now Fourth Street in downtown St. Albans. On July 10, 1802, the town petitioned for incorporation as a village under the name of "New Albany." The request was granted and New Albany became part of St. Albans when it incorporated as a village on November 15, 1802. The early settlers were farmers who had come to central West Virginia to find new land where they could grow crops and live off the land rather than become slave labor on plantations that lived near them in South Carolina and Georgia. By 1830, many of these farmers had moved away from central West Virginia to settle in eastern Kentucky because of improved farming conditions there and more opportunities for profit than they found in western Pennsylvania or Ohio where their ancestors had originally come from. When Andrew Jackson became President of America in 1829, he decided to make westward movement his goal for America as he felt that if American society could be reformed so that people were content with less wealth while enjoying good health instead of being constantly sick or working long hours for little pay (a common occurrence during Jackson's time), then America would be an "enlightened" country that could compete with other countries economically and politically once again. To this end, Jackson ordered Army General James K!nger to march through Ohio into Pennsylvania looking for any evidence that American colonists were still trying to secede from their government - an event known as The Battle Of Gettysburg which resulted in over 50 thousand American casualties including 2700 Americans dead or missing while K!nger's forces reached Philadelphia unopposed on July 4th 1865). This action demonstrated how serious Jackson regarded secessionist activities within our own borders - something that would continue throughout much of his presidency until he left office five years later due to death at age 75 due to natural causes (he had been suffering from a debilitating inflammation called paralysis since before he took office). In 1836-37 local developers built what is now called First National Bank building on Main Street east of present day Third Street across frompresent day Walmart Store which stands today as one side entrance into St! Albans Square Mall parking lot after having been renovated several times between 1903-1966 including adding a movie theater (the only one northcentral WV ever did) addition bowling alley (opened 1921), four restaurants: Three Men’s Tavern (now Mother Earth Cafe), Old World Tavern & Saloon (now White Sands Casino Resort & Spa), Moonshine Alley Bar & Grill featuring live music every night except Sunday nights; Grange Hall also served as Post Office; three churches: Episcopal Church built by Reverend John Wallis around 1790; Baptist church built about 1840 by Jno Henson; Methodist church built about 1850 by Rev Elisha Duffield In addition: Pony Express Station operated here from 1861-1865; First National Bank Building served as Courthouse until 1955 when courthouse burned down In 2005 restoration project began which included removal/replacement/repair/updates inside/outside First National Bank Building front facade along with installation new sidewalks inside/outside building façade Restoration project also added new 300+ sq ft commercial space adjacent First National Bank Building front facade which functions currently as St Alban's Pizza restaurant

The first post office in the town was established in 1782. In 1814, St. Albans became a county seat of Fayette County. In 1870, the United States Census counted 1,871 residents in the town; this number decreased to 1,527 by 1880. The population of thetown decreased again to 922 by 1900.
