The town of St. Albans, West Virginia was founded in 1819 by Captain John Smith. The town grew rapidly due to the production of coal and lumber. The population reached 5,000 in 1920 and 10,000 in 1930. In 1951, the townsite was annexed into the larger city of Wheeling. Today, St. Albans is a small but vibrant community with a rich history. The first settlement in what is now St. Albans was called "Natchez," which means "place where some animals were kept." The first settler in what is now St. Albans was Captain John Smith, who arrived on horseback from England on November 1, 1819 to explore the area for possible land purchases or investment opportunities. He found suitable land and erected a log cabin near present-day Main Street and Second Avenue. By 1830, over 100 people had moved to what is now St. Albans from surrounding villages including Winchester, Clarksburg, Harpers Ferry and Wheeling Junction (now Waverly). Many of these early settlers were Congregationalists who relocated to west Virginia specifically because they considered it their home territory following the American Revolution (1775-83). Captain Smith's town site included several lots that he divided into six blocks each - one block for white men only, one block for free blacks ( mulattoes ), two blocks for slaves (two thirds owned by planters), and one block for Indians (all reserved for Chiefs). Each lot contained between sixteen and twenty feet depth of coal dust or permanganate clay soil with good potential as an agricultural ground as well as being built up around a small frame house or corncrib with three stories high surrounded by gardens grown using manure from nearby livestock pens/stables/farms along Mechanics Creek where water wheels powered sawmills running flumes to turn corn cribs until 1850 when steamboats took over this important transportation link providing access not only to central Pennsylvania but also downriver markets at Charleston Harbor before terminating at points north at Richmond Ferry Landing then continuing upriver through Point Pleasant then reaching Baltimore via ferry landing at Ellicott City south of Washington Crossing thence direct route viawater wheelboat across Elizabeth River arriving here late June 1800

St. Albans, West Virginia is a small town located in Brooke County, West Virginia. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the St. Albans Presbyterian Church and the Saint Albans Cemetery. The name of the town comes from St. Albanus, an early Christian missionary who was martyred in Rome in 387 AD. The first permanent settler in what is now St. Albans Township was James Burchfield, who arrived in 1786. Other early residents include John Fenton and his family in 1811, Nicholas Hunt in 1814, and Elias Banninger in 1827-28. In 1851 James Atherton laid out part of present-day Brooke County on land grant from George Washington to settle Methodist Episcopal refugees from Kentucky brought over by Andrew Jackson as part of his New Frontier program. That same year saw the founding of the Saint Alban Parish Church which still exists today as one of West Virginia’s most prominent landmarks (along with Mount Rushmore National Monument). In 1870 WV became a state within the United States and St Albans became its capital; however, it retained its post office until 1903 when it moved to Morgantown due to postal service limitations at that time across state lines (see also: Morgantown Post Office). In 1907 construction began on what would become known as “The Palace” which served as both the original municipal building for St Albans Township (which had been established three years earlier) and also as home to then-Mayor Charles Purdy (1885-1905) during his years as Mayor Pro Tem; this building still stands today as part of city hall district 2B/C located off US 20 near Greenbrier Boulevard partially funded by Vandalia businessman Don Blankenship through State Farm Insurance Company funds while he held office beginning after 2000 C&O Canal Co.. Over time many other buildings were added or replaced including a fire station built around 1935 along with two currently extant elementary schools - one serving grades PK 3 through 6 while another serves grades 7 through 12 - all funded via bonds issued throughout various decades including some proceeds generated by coal mining operations now closed inside those old boundaries.. When WV seceded from United States federal government on November 11th 1861 following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation there followed a series of raids and attacks against settlements loyal to Confederate President Jefferson Davis throughout much of 1861-1865 primarily conducted by Union General Ulysses S Grant rather than Confederate forces themselves although some elements did participate such as Brigadier General Hugh Bales command detachment attacking White Oak Corner circa January 1862 under orders from Grant Many men serve multiple wars & countries dozens did die nobly fighting for us & we all can be grateful
In 1881, the St. Albans Post Office was established at the corner of East and North Streets. In 1902, it moved to its present location on Market Street. The post office closed in 1994.
