Additionally, there are several private schools within walking distance of downtown such as Eastlake School District’s Hillcrest School (a private girls' high school), Episcopal Academy (an all-girls middle school), John Marshall School (a high school for African Americans) and Parkersburg Area Senior High School (a public high school). St. Alban's is home to an annual arts festival which features local talent as well as international artists performing at various venues throughout downtown on Saturday mornings from late spring through early fall."

In 1861, St. Albans was chosen as the location for the first Confederate military installation in West Virginia. The regiment that barracks there fought in the battle of Antietam and Battle of Gettysburg before being mustered out in 1865. The land on which St. Albans stands was purchased by a group of men from nearby Mount Vernon who wanted to create a town there. The town's name, however, is still associated with its Confederate namesake- St. Albans City- today it is an unincorporated community located in Mingo County.
