In the early 1800s, St. Albans was a small town in West Virginia. It was located on the banks of the Monongahela River, about 25 miles west of Pittsburgh. The town developed around a Presbyterian church and school, which were both founded in 1792. In 1811, the town became part of Kentucky and remained so until it seceded from the United States in 1861. Then, it reverted to its original name—St. Albans—until1965 when it changed back to West Virginia. The town is currently home to about 1,500 people and is one of the most economically vibrant areas in the state. The first settlers to arrive in what is now St. Albans were Presbyterians who arrived in 1792 with their families from Scotland. The church and school were built soon after by local farmers and landholders who donated their land for these purposes. By 1800, there were about 100 people living in St. Albans; however, it only grew rapidly thereafter due to population growth throughout Appalachia and increased agricultural production especially within the surrounding counties such as Lewis County (now Perry County) and Armstrong County (now Brooke County). Continued development led to an increase in housing stock including brick houses, frame buildings, log homes/churches and other types of structures that remain today among Saint Albans’ notable landmarks such as First Presbyterian Church (1796), Methodist Episcopal Church (1801), Bank of America Building (1812), Old Post Office (1819), Court House Annex (1825) and more! During its time as a small town situated on the bank of a river near Pittsburgh responsible for goods being transported downriver for shipment to customers all over Pennsylvania as well as Ohio & Indiana; some significant events that took place at or around St Alban's include: On December 6th 1811 Reverend John Sloan preached his last sermon at First Presbyterian Church before moving on upriver to become pastor at Harper’s Ferry Baptist Church where he would serve until his death six years later on January 22nd 1823; while Ulysses S Grant was President & Calhoun served as Vice President during this time period many events took place including: A fight between militia men from nearby Wheeling & Huntington over property boundaries leading Ultimately one man died & 20 were injured when stones are thrown through windows by participants (& subsequent arrests) Marriages occurred among residents here during these times particularly between Rev Sloan’s congregants like Alexander Campbell who married Margaret Whitehead & Jonathan Smith numerous children were born also including future Governors James Ketchum OF WV & Andrew Johnson AKA “Dr Jokes” To say that life was noisy back then is an understatement!
The town of St. Albans, West Virginia was founded on December 12, 1817 by Captain John Gist and his wife Martha. It grew quickly as a result of the area's vast coal deposits and its location in the foothills of Appalachia. The town was named after Saint Albans, England, where Gist had been born in 1788. In 1830, St. Albans became the capital of West Virginia. After the death of President James K. Polk in1849, St. Albans reverted to its original name and remained an important city until it was annexed by Charleston, South Carolina in 1865.
