South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town in Monongalia County,West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of what is now South Charleston were the Shawnee Indians who lived there for many years before they left in 1812 and moved to present day Oklahoma. The town was founded in 1881 by John S. Lewis and named after his father General James S. Lewis who fought in the American Civil War and died of an illness at age 42 while serving as a brigadier general in the Union army under Ulysses S. Grant. The original courthouse was built on what is now Main Street and it served as the county seat until 1912 when West Virginia State Highway 2 was completed and South Charleston became its own municipality with its own police department and fire department. In 1935, John Lewis' great grandson James A. Lewis donated land to build a high school which opened on October 14th, 1936 named South Charleston High School after his grandfather's late gift to the townspeople In 1978, South Charleston voters approved passage of a city charter that provided for an elected mayor and city council with power over all aspects of municipal government including zoning ordinances, taxation policies, public works projects etc., all within limits set by state statute This new form of government gave rise to various controversies which continue to this day such as conflicts over control of major thoroughfares such as Main Street or how much money should be spent on Parks & Recreation rather than other priorities In 2002-2004 Mayor Darryl Bowers unsuccessfully sought reelection against then Councilwomanoe Linda Jenson In 2009 Mayor Kenneth Lunsford won re-election against challenger Lisa Brownlow with 54% of the vote

South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town located in Hampshire County, West Virginia. The town was founded in 1827 and has since grown to occupy an area of 9 square miles. South Charleston is the only municipality in Hampshire County and is the county seat. The population of South Charleston was recording at 1,811 as of the 2010 census. The original inhabitants of what is now South Charleston were the Monongahela Nation. In 1827, white settlers from Kentucky arrived in what is now Hampshire County and began to settle along the Kanawha River. One of these early settlers, John Headrick, purchased land along the Kanawha River from the Monongahela Nation for $1 per acre. By 1830, Headrick had settled about 100 people in what is now South Charleston. In 1840, when Indian Removal Act took effect, most of present-day Hampshire County was included within Jackson Township (now part of Logan County). However, some portions of present-day South Charleston were not annexed into Jackson Township until 1846 and 1860 respectively. Today’s downtown area occupies much of this earlier territory including parts of Old Hickory Cemetery and First Presbyterian Church which date back to 1792. In addition to its older buildings and landmarks, today’s downtown also includes several new businesses such as Brown & Sons Hardware store which opened in 1922 and currently employs over 150 employees; Bluegrass Bistro which opened in 1984; Griggs Chevrolet dealership; Ascension Bakery; American Legion Post #412 ; Baptist Church (First Baptist) ; former Piggly Wiggly store closed down on October 15th 2003 after almost 60 years on Main Street.; Crockett’s Pizza restaurant closed down on September 25th 2009 after more than 40 years on Main Street.; Present day City Hall complex built between 1904-1910 with help from local architect Aiken & Eldredge who designed many other notable structures in that time period.; Wilburn Elementary School opened kindergarten Preschoolindergarten - 3rd grade school year 2019 When looking at all aspects related to history for SouthCharleston it would be difficult not to notice how intertwined community life actually hath been throughout time here! With so much going on within each individual family or group there have been moments where everyone works together towards a common goal or accomplishment! The town of South Charleston, West Virginia was founded in 1825. The town grew as a result of the industry that developed in the area due to the coal mines that were located nearby. The town has since grown and changed many times, including becoming a center for education and culture.
