In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through South Charleston on their way to destroy Fort Sumter in what is now Charlestown Township. In 1886, the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Museum was built in South Charleston and serves as a historical marker for South Carolina. The library has since been moved to Mount Vernon National Cemetery in Washington D.C., but portions of it remain open to the public inside the South Charleston Visitor Center (www.usgvacationparkguidebookletinfo). South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town in Mercer County, West Virginia. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston–Fayetteville, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Charleston was founded by English colonists in 1738 as a trading post on the Kanawha River. In 1814 it became the capital of Mercer County and remained so until 1861 when it moved to Wheeling, WV. The county seat then shifted to Fayetteville and remains there today. The first white settler in South Charleston was George Washington who arrived in 1738. He built a cabin near present day Second Street and Old Market Road. Washington's cabin is now known as "Old George's" and is on display at the Mercer County Historical Society Museum in Liberty University where it is open to visitors weekdays 9am-4pm from May through October (closed Mondays). In 1814, South Charleston became the capital of Mercer County after its incorporation from Randolph County following the violence surrounding Indian Removal (the Trail of Tears). At that time, only 1 percent of West Virginians were slaves – most slave owners lived outside of east Tennessee or south Alabama. However, by 1861 much of eastern West Virginia had become free and many people living in southern Mercer County along with their slaves left for freedom when Union troops invaded during the American Civil War. Many residents of central South Charleston also fled to neighboring Fayetteville when Confederate forces began shelling their homes late one night in 1863 during what later came to be called "The Sullivan Raid." On January 1st 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all male citizens over 21 years old residing within 6 miles of any Union army detachment located anywhere west of Cumberland Heights (including all those living within 2 miles of Petersburg) must head into battle or be captured alive; this order effectively ended slavery throughout much western Pennsylvania including southwestern Maryland including parts of southeastern Ohio including South Charleston including all but three blocks within downtown Wheeling limits before finally reaching Richmond days later that month….Many families decided against fleeing across state lines rather than face capture or death at Confederate hands….As dawn broke on January 2nd 1865 over 4500 men lay dead or wounded inside Fort Donelson while another 5000 more were penned up inside Fort Pillow…..Many residents remaining behind chose instead to fight for their country even if they did not own property within Confederate territory………Aftermath: total burial: 12000+
South Charleston was founded in 1792 by James McDowell and his wife, Elizabeth. The town became a part of Virginia in 1802. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters from Winchester, Virginia to South Charleston after the Battle of Antietam Mountain. The town's population decreased following the war and it was abandoned in 1865.
