In 1935, Franklin Dyson developed a device known as an optic montage which allowed him to combine images taken by different instruments into one image using just a few minutes of time! This invention changed how scientists view astronomy and opened up new opportunities for studying space phenomena

South Charleston was founded in 1792 by Captain John Smith, who named it for his birthplace, South Carolina. Grant burned down part of South Charleston's courthouse as punishment for supporting the Confederacy. In 1881, South Charleston became an incorporated town under West Virginia law. It continued to grow quickly until World War II caused a decrease in population; however, it has since increased again thanks to various industries such as manufacturing and agricultural production. Today, South Charleston is known for its annual "Festival of Flowers" which celebrates flower culture and local produce.
In 1865, the Confederate States of America surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This event ended the war and slavery in the United States. The area that is now Charleston was originally called "Kings Point" because it served as a military post for Confederate forces. After the war, many of the soldiers who had fought in it returned home and started new lives in what is now South Charleston. In 1871, a group of businessmen founded the city's first bank, which remains active to this day. Between 1870 and 1880, many African Americans migrated from northern states to work on plantations in South Carolina. These people helped create Charleston's black community by assimilating into local society and working their land.
