They were farmers and traders who built up what is now known as the "Old South Charleston" area around present day Main Street and Meeting House Road. In 1814, General Samuel J. Wofford led an army through Sullivan County to battle against Native Americans near present day Georgetown on the Potomac River. After this victory over the Indians, Wofford named his new settlement after General George Washington's birthplace in Alexandria, Virginia - "Washington Point". In 1823, the town was incorporated as a borough by order of Governor John Alden Mason and named for Charleston, South Carolina - one of several American settlements that received this honor during President James Ketchum's administration (1823-27). At its incorporation date, South Charleston had a population of 607 residents (). When coal mining began in earnest in Southwest Coal Fields region of central West Virginia in 1890s there was great demand for workers both here and eastern Kentucky because it offered better pay than labor found anywhere else on the continent. By 1918 some 1 million tons of coal had been mined here since early 1800s including 350 miles worth on top of mountains which formed what today constitutes downtown South Charleston streetscape with high rises overlooking harborfront properties used by local businesses such as banks and restaurants etc., giving it its unique skyline view also visible from much further out across downtown Norfolk/Virginia Beach VA

In 1959, South Charleston and Mingo County merged to form Greenbrier County. Today, South Charleston is a small unincorporated community located within Greenbrier County. The town of South Charleston was originally three settlements: Charles Town (founded 1786), Spanish Town (founded 1800), and Dutch Town (founded 1802). Charles Town was the first settlement and its name came from General Robert E. Lee, who named the town for himself after defeating British troops at the Battle of Yorktown in 1868. Spanish Town was founded 1800 by Spaniards who moved to what is now Mingo County after being driven out of their previous land by Native Americans. Dutch Town was founded on November 15, 1802 by Pieter deGraaf and his brother-in-law Adriaan van der Donk because they felt that they would not be able to get along with other settlers in what is now Greenbrier County because of their different religions and language abilities. In 1907, South Charleston became part of Mingo County when it bordered Youngstown on the north and Jackson on the south. At that time there were only a few hundred people living in South Charleston combined with 1,000 people living in Mingo County alone This merger made much more sense because both counties were overcrowded with residents from neighboring counties moving into Mingo due to inexpensiveland prices which increased as new towns were developed around Greenbrier Valley during this time period . South Carolina natives John Jett and Elijah Watkins establishedGreenbrier Coal Mines near where present day Hill District stands today while others such as George Stephenson built sawmills around Keyes Dam just east of present day Welsh Creek Drive . By 1920s coal mining had depleted resources so most businesses closed including stores such as Woolworth’s & Sears Roebuck but some continued until around 1960s when US Steel Corporation took over operations followed by FirstEnergy Corporation which currently operates generators/pumps for MW power plant across river

During this time, South Charleston became known as one of the most Progressive cities in Appalachia. In 1912, South Charleston voters passed a ordinance forbidding lynching. This ordinance helped to stabilityify South Charleston during a time of turmoil in neighboring counties.
