South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Eastern Branch of the Roanoke River. The first settlers in South Charleston were George Washington and his family who came from Portsmouth, England in 1784. They started a log cabin on the present-day site of South Charleston in 1792. In 1801, General Anthony Wayne's army burned down the log cabin and all that remained of it were some reconstructed timbers which still stand today on Court Street near Post Office Square. In 1814, General James Ketchum moved his headquarters to what is now South Charleston from Winchester because he thought it would be more safe there than at Winchester where there was an invasion threatened by Andrew Jackson. After the Battle of Bull Run (1861), General Scaife built a two-story brick house on Church Street for himself and his staff officers around 1864. In 1865, when Confederate forces abandoned Petersburg following Lee's surrender, South Charleston became part of Union Territory of Kanawha County under Union Major General Order No 3/2 which took effect January 1st, 1865. In 1870, local farmers formed a cooperative society to raise hay for export to Europe called "The Western Hay Company". This company continued until 1907 when it merged with another cooperative society to become "National Hay and Feeding Corporation" which continues today as Tyson Foods Incorporated. From 1902 until 1906, Reverend Julius Nystrom served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in South Charleston after being elected by church members in 1903 based on his preaching skills and missionary work in Russia then Siberia conducted by Revs John Witherspoon and David McDonald who also served as pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg before coming to Spartanburg County circuit court where they began serving as pastors from 1906 until their death in 1916). Reverend Nystrom also served as treasurer for Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Western Virginia Branch from 1913 through 1917 during its effort to establish an organization within SBC known as Northern Virginia District with jurisdiction over much of West Virginia including Spartanburg County including what is now South Charleston Township since this territory was added to WVB under territorial authority following SBC’s establishment here; Rev Dr Julius Nystrom died unexpectedly while traveling eastward en route to participate in SBC’s new district function meeting at Huntington Library July 12th 1917). Prior thereto he had been serving terms as president pro tem since 1914 concurrent with service holding office previously mentioned; Mrs Mabel Bowser succeeded him temporarily effective September 15th 1917). South Charleston is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2000 census. The name "South Charleston" comes from the English word "Scotshire", which means "south of the Shannon". The town was laid out by Captain James Lincoln in 1792 and named for him. It has been known as South Charleston since 1825. The first reference to a post office in South Charleston is dated December 3, 1827. At that time, it was called Palmyra Post Office. In 1829, it changed its name to SouthCharleston and remained so until 1890 when it reverted back to its original name of South Charleston. From 1893 until 1907, SouthCharleston had no post office; residents simply sent their mail through local carriers. In 1910, General John JEFFERSON bought 640 acres (240 hectares) of land in southwestern Kanawha County for $5,000 and erected asmall log cabin as his headquarters. He named the community Jefferson because of this purchase. The first school in Jefferson was built on November 12th, 1912 by Mrs Jane SANDBERG who raised money by selling baked goods door-to-door throughout the area. A second school was built on October 16th 1913 by Rev GEOFFREY WILSON with financial assistance from local businessman Leland POLK and Mrs Jane SANDBERG’s husband Edward CAREY Sr.. A third school building also served as an ambulance station during World War I until 1917 when all ambulances were moved to nearby Harrisonburg because of frequent conflict between Confederate forces and Union forces around that time
