During World War II, many local businesses contributed to the war effort by manufacturing munitions or providing materials for the military. Some examples include: Pulteney’s Brewery (producing beer for military use), Fritsch & Gamble’s Furniture Store (manufacturing airplane parts), Armour Implement Company (producing artillery pieces), Southern Electric Company (producing electrical equipment), and Bowman's Candy Shop (making candy). Today, with its growing economy and expanding infrastructure including two hospitals and three educational institutions - South Charleston remains one of Appalachia's most vibrant communities with a rich cultural heritage dating back to its early days as a small frontier settlement.

Charleston, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The name of the town comes from "Charleston," a port on the James River where early American settlers made their home. The town was founded in 1781 as a trading post by George Washington and his party during their crossing of the Ohio River from Kentucky to treat for trade with Native Americans. By 1800, Charleston had become an important commercial center on the Ohio River and had become known as "The Fiver". In 1814, Congress passed an act providing for its incorporation into Mingo County. On July 1, 1828, Charleston became the first incorporated city in West Virginia when it joined The City of Wheeling (now W Wheeling). The city's first mayor was John Muckleatt who served until 1830. In 1870-71 Charleston lost its status as a city because of heavy crop failures that followed overproduction caused by floods associated with major monsoons then being experienced across much of Appalachia at that time; however, it regained its status as an independent municipality within Mingo County upon repeal of section 3(a) of Appendix A to chapter 362A RCW which granted cities such independence without specific voter approval or vote by committee consisting only of elected officials from those municipalities
The first European to set foot in what is now South Charleston, West Virginia was the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1502. The area that is now South Charleston was part of Mingo County, Virginia until 1792 when it became part of Westsylvania County. On November 7, 1846, a group of men from Kentucky who were on their way to claim land in eastern Missouri stopped at Westsylvania County for supplies and began building a cabin called Kearsarge on the east bank of the Kanawha River. They named their settlement after General John Custer's cavalry unit which had been badly defeated by Native Americans near Kansas City, Missouri two years earlier. The men from Kentucky continued to live and work at Kearsarge until January 8, 1850 when they left for Louisville because the Missouri Compromise had been passed and slavery was illegal in all of Kansas Territory except southern Illinois. On January 9th, 1850, General James M. Gilmore arrived with 1,500 men to take over control of Westsylvania County from the Kentuckymen. Gilmore renamed the county South Charleston after himself because he thought that it would be more popular with locals than Lexington or Alexandria which were both names given to counties by other officials. In December 1861 Confederate forces under Generals Robert E. Lee attacked Fort Sumter in Sumter Park across from downtown Charleston and effectively cut off Union access to the Kanawha Valley which resulted in an embarrassing defeat for Confederate forces at Midway Hill shorty thereafter. This event led directly toitations between Union and Confederate troops throughout much of central Appalachia as each side tried to capitalize on the local humiliation while also seeking revenge against those responsible for its defeat at Fort Sumter
