South Charleston is a town in Buchanan County, West Virginia. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Choctaw word "chalkhills" which means "level ground." The Union forces were retreating southward after losing the battle that day near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Many residents fled to other parts of West Virginia or Kentucky before dawn on September 16th when orders came through for all men to line up outside local churches for military service under General Ulysses S Grant’s Overland Campaign against Confederate forces west of Richmond, Virginia
