South Charleston is a small town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Ft. Wayne, WV-OH–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by English settlers in 1855 and named for Charleston, South Carolina. After the American Civil War, the town became a Union military outpost during the war and was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant after he arrived in West Virginia as commander of Union forces there in 1865. In 1872, South Charleston acquired its present name when it merged with nearby Clarksburg to become one municipality. The merger resulted in two towns having the same name; this practice continued until 1978 when another merger led to three separate municipalities within West Virginia: Clarksburg-Westmoreland County (Clarksburg), Harrisonburg-Norfolk County (Harrisonburg), and South Charleston-Tottenville Township (South Charleston). The history of South Charleston dates back to 1855 when English settlers arrived in what is now West Virginia from London via boats on October 11th that year according to historical records . At first they set up shop near Clarksburg but soon began leasing land from local Native Americans who had been living there since before European arrival. One such settler was George Henshaw who leased land between Mount Pleasant Creek and Mount Vernon River from Chief Powhatan about 1800AD according to John Copley’s account “This man had purchased some of our country at very low prices from our Indian Enemies” reported Copley circa 1775/6 as quoted by historian Francis Parkman . By 1825 most of these original English settlers were gone with only a few hundred left living among the native nations that once populated this area including Potomac tribe members known as Shawnees under chief Kanawha whose village lay on what is now called Mt Justice Drive southeast of today's town center located adjacent acreage belonging today's state park while north east of where Fort Pitt once stood lies today's smaller community known simply as "South Charleston." As early as 1857 notes one newspaper editor writing about agricultural prospects:"It has long been supposed that these [Potomac] tribes will sell their lands at any price offered by those who purchase them; but no one can say positively whether this will be so or not" Furthermore many residents hereabouts still spoke Potomac language even though all white men had fled by then following relocation efforts during western settlement period culminating with Great Britain’s loss at Yorktown Campaign during war against America starting September 25th 1781 ceded over 16 million acres across thirteen colonies bringing much needed revenue into British coffers thereby saving British Crown yet again almost £10 million sterling making possible King George III’s decision backdated July 21st 1782 announced December 5th 1782 authorizing establishment of posts westward along both sides of Ohio River southward across James River thence through Kentucky Proper thence through Tennessee Proper joining up with Washington Territory forming Northwest Territory on January 1st 1783 also authorizes construction westward along said river line of road building begun herein" - thus beginning what would ultimately become known as southern Appalachia becoming a key transportation artery linking eastern Pennsylvania Dutch New England Valley regionachable via mountain passes resulting in increasing coal production throughout Appalachian Mountains essential feeding ground for entire Northeast Corridor economies growth expanding beyond southeastern PA trade routes entombing remains of ancient civilizations more than 4500 BC creating unique prehistoric landscape eons older than any human presence inhabiting present day US
The area that would become South Charleston was first settled by the Shawnee in the early 1800s. The area was originally named for Captain John Smith, who discovered the Ohio River and then founded Charleston in 1741. The town slowly grew and became a major important center of trade with Kentucky, Tennessee, and other states.
