In the early 1800s, South Charleston was a small town on the banks of the Kanawha River. It was known for its white-owned mills and for its fishing and hunting opportunities. The town also had a small number of black residents. The area that is now South Charleston was first settled by Native Americans in the late 15th century. In 1609, English settlers arrived in what is now West Virginia and began to settle in this area. By 1740, South Charleston had become a small village with around 100 residents. During the Revolutionary War, South Charleston sided with the British side against the United States. However, during the war, many local citizens joined forces with the American side and helped to fight against British troops. After the war ended, many of these same people returned to their homes in South Charleston and started to rebuild their businesses. In 1810, South Charleston became an incorporated city under WV Code § 2-5-2 (the “Code of Civility”). This code established certain rules about public behavior which were still followed until after World War II. The city also made some important advances within its community during this time including creating a public library, establishing land trusts as well as promoting cold weather sports such as skiing and ice skating. In 1876, South Charleston became part of Greenbrier County when it was created from parts of Wyoming County and Jackson County. At that point, Greenbrier County consisted of all of West Virginia south of Butternut Mountain along I-81/I-79/US 12 and included much of modernSouthCharleston except for sections lying eastward on US 12 near Clarksburg (then called McKeesport)
