In 1875, John C. Parker and his brother, George, opened a retail store in Parkersburg. The brothers were the first to sell telescopes in the area. In 1904, they sold their store and business to J.B. Spalding who used it as his own observatory until he sold it to H.W. White in 1909. The Parker Observatory was privatized by General Electric Corporation in 1957 and is now operated by the Parkersburg Astronomical Society (PAS). The PAS has been providing public access to the building since 1967. During its history, the PAS has made numerous donations of equipment and funds to various astronomy organizations around the world including NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt MD., Siding Spring Observatory near Canberra NSW., La Silla Observatory on Isidro Garza Island off Chile's coast, and Arecibo Observatory on Puerto Rico's island of Vieques.. Parker's telescope collection includes a total of twelve telescopes which are currently preserved at Greenbelt MD., six of which are single-degrees-of-freedom instrument Telescopes (SDOTs), three triplet instruments (TTIs), one quadruplet instrument (+4m) known as CNRS/OESI ESO 2MASS GALEX 3 Survey Telescope Mission 1A/1B, two Vixen scopes (+25m each) originally built for use with coronagraphic imaging cameras developed by Hughes Aircraft Company for USAF satellite reconnaissance missions; a pair of Haleakala telescopes - one 25" diameter F8 refractor and one 15" diameter Schmidt aberration grating reticle reflector telescope; an 8 metre Cassegrain telescope formerly owned by University College London astronomer Dr David Williams . Parkersburg is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Parkersburg is located on the Ohio River and forms its eastern border with Steubenville. The community was founded by John C. Parker in 1811 as a trading post on the Shawnee Trail between Kentucky and Ohio. In 1812, Parker erected a log stockade to protect his trade routes from Indian attack. He named his post "Parkerstown" after himself and donated land to the town for development. The first store in Parkersburg opened in 1824, and within two years it had become an important center for commerce in Mingo County. By 1830, Parkerstown had become one of the leading towns in West Virginia because of its location on the main transportation route between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. In 1839, John C. Park built a gristmill that became one of the largest mills in Jackson County. Park's mill manufactured flour, feed grains, lumber, cheese, eggs and other goods until it closed in 1916 due to technological advances which made grindingstones less necessary; however, parts of this complex still stand today as tourist attractions known as "The Old Mill". In 1861 during West Virginia's secession from the Union following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (see also: Vandalism), many residents of Parkersburg took up arms against their state government and participated in what came to be called "the March upon Morgantown". After nine days' hard fighting they were driven back into their homes with few casualties while resulting damage to much property including barns and houses increased significantly throughout Mingo County Unable or unwilling to continue war against a southern state they turned over power to their northern governors who did not hesitate before using them extensively for Reconstruction purposes right through until about 1920 when parkerville proper regained all lost taxes theretofore amounting $15 per thousand valuation

The town of Parkersburg was founded in 1796 by Nicholas Parker and his family. The town became a railroad stop on the Ohio and Tennessee Railroad, and in 1876 it merged with nearby Christiana to form the new town of Parkersburg-Christiana. In 1907, the town of Parkersburg-Christiana merged with the nearby city of Wheeling to form Wheeling-Parkersburg.
