In 1903 Hinton built the first grocery store west of Pittsburgh across Broad Street from what is now Appalachian State University's main campus; it remains one of only two such stores remaining in western Pennsylvania after more than 150 years of business development around that location alone In 1861 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Confederate sympathizers within Harrison County to leave or be burned alive; many did so including Sam Hinton Jr.. When Union General Ulysses S Grant set up his headquarters at Market Hill in Richmond during the American Civil War in 1861, Parkersburg became one of four towns within Confederate territory to be evacuated before that war ended two years later. The town's residents returned only when Union General Robert Ewell ordered them out of Confederate territory on April 12, 1865; they reoccupied their homes for six days until federal troops arrived and relieved them from any military obligations. The current structure of downtown Parkersburg developed around this time: A market square with buildings housing courts and other governmental functions (such as the Farmers Bank), a courthouse (1868), a library (1892), an opera house (1902), and several residences built by wealthy citizens near Market Square to accommodate visiting dignitaries or soldiers quartered thereabouts. In 1968–69 renovation of Market Square destroyed most of the historical fabric of downtown Parkersburg; however much has been reconstructed since then such as new streetscapes and architecture. On July 20th 1948 local resident Everett Forrest shot death gunman Julius Edgar Hoover inside his home on US 25 south/west of town limits; this event became known as "Hoover's Shooting" because no further shooters have ever been apprehended.
