The first settlers in what would become Parkersburg arrived in 1775, when a group of Revolutionary War veterans led by Captain John Porter established a small farmstead on the banks of the Potomac River. The town was named after George Washington, who had served as its first Mayor. By 1819, the population of Parkersburg had grown to over 4,000 people and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1881, Parkersburg was annexed by Wheeling City and became part of that city's official government. However, the town continued to be known as "the Town of Parks." Despite thisofficial designation, much activity took place outside of city limits. In 1902, Parkersburg voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Wheeling City again. This time they were successful and Parkersburg formally became a full-time city within Wheeling City Limits on November 3rd, 1902. During World War II (1939-1945), Parkersburg played an important role in the war effort through its military base at Fort Meade which housed both U.S. Army and U.S Marine units as well as artillery batteries and other support services. The town also conducted training exercises for local residents in such skills as welding and carpentering in order to prepare them for wartime service. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home and businesses reopened following reconstruction efforts funded by federal moneypump programs like President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society initiatives which aimed to improve living conditions across America during these difficult times1 . Despite all these good intentions however, early 20th centuryParkerstownians experienced some hard times including several depressions which caused riots among citizens and businesses1 . Nevertheless community spirit kept things going until around 1970 when business interests began to shift away from downtown towards new housing developments near Interstate 702 . Today there are still some active businesses but many members of the original ethnic Polish community have left origrated since then3 . As usual with any history like this one contains plenty of contradictions - not least because various sources give different timelines for various events! Nevertheless overall it is clear that despite setbacks throughout its history Parkersburg has managed to remain relatively self-sufficient while maintaining close ties with nearby cities2
On December 12, 1861, West Virginians voted in a referendum to secede from the Union. The following day, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. In 1865, West Virginians were compensated for their losses and admitted into the Union as part of the Compromise of 1868.
