This weapon had been developed by Colonel Samuel Colt and it functioned well enough for combat purposes despite its low quality materials. The Springfield Armory rifle was particularly useful against cavalry units as they were unable to hit them with traditional cannon fire. However, this type of warfare didn’t last very long after Confederate forces surrendered on April 9th 1865. Union troops soon began using rifles such as the Remington 870 shotgun which couldpierce through armor like no other weapon at that time. Parkersburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brooke County. Parkersburg is located in the Gallatin Valley region of Appalachia and straddles the Potomac River. The first European settlers in what is now Parkersburg were French colonists who arrived in 1763 as part of George Washington's Army during the French and Indian War. They built a small log cabin on present-day Goose Creek Road near where Fort Frederick stood until it was destroyed by fire in 1802. In 1805, John Crain, an Englishman with fur links to Russia, founded a trading post on the site called Crain's Station or Upper Parkersburg (later renamed Clarksburg). remained there until it was destroyed by Indians in 1812. In 1796, George Mason purchased 2,500 acres (100 hectares) of land along Youghiogheny River for $5 per acre from James Mercer and erected a tavern known as "Mason's Forge" on this property. In 1800–1801 he also constructed a millrace called "Masons Water" which supplied Mill Run water for use by mills located downstream including Upperville and Greenbrier Mills. A schoolhouse also was built on this site about1801; it burned down in 1865 but has been restored and used as community center since then. In 1807 Nathaniel Parker bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) east of Clarksburg from John Smeaton for $25 per acre using money he had saved from working his father's estate while living with his family at Madison Barracks near Fredericktown during the war years when that area was under military occupation because Charleston had been captured by General Jeffery Amherst.) This new tract became known as Upper Parkersburg after Nathaniel Parker’s older brother Ebenezer “Nate” Parker acquired additional land to its south-west extending into Brooke County just before peace negotiations ended American Civil War on April 12th 1865 when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following two days of hard fighting including three days of siege operations around Petersburg Alabama which resulted in over 400 deaths mainly Confederate soldiers plus many Union Soldiers who lost their lives trying to escape across Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks inside Richmond Virginia/North Carolina leading up to Appomattox Court House

Parkersburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,441 at the 2010 census, down from 8,844 at the 2000 census. The town is included in the Wheeling-Richmond County metropolitan area. Parkersburg has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. In 1776, George Washington and his army invaded West Virginia and fought against British forces near Parkersburg. In 1814, when Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States and moved his headquarters to Knoxville, Tennessee, he ordered General James K. Polk to march on Parkersburg to besiege its artillery depot. The U.S.-Canadian force arrived too late to save the town and it surrendered on December 16th of that year. In 1862 Union General Robert Ewell attacked Confederate General Averill Harriman's supply line near Parkersburg while supplies were being transported into West Virginia from Kentucky via Mobile Bay Bridge. After weeks of bombardment and combat Harriman's small force surrendered on May 9th after engaging more than 1,500 Confederates including 400 cavalrymen On October 15th 1863 Union General Ulysses S Grant landed at Cherry Point on York River in what is now Huntington County and destroyed part of Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Crampton's defenses after winning a pitched battle lasting four days The Battle of Gettysburg resulted in about 375 casualties for both sides with about half of those killed or wounded within a three mile radius around Cemetery Hill Aftermath: Over two million men served in World War II including 350 officers from West Virginia In 1865 Union General George Armstrong Custer left Fort Donelson to attack Clifton Forge where he was killed leading his 5th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Missionary Ridge
In 1831, the first post office in Parkersburg was established. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Parkersburg became the capital of West Virginia. The town's population ballooned as soldiers and civilians relocated to the area for war-time work and business opportunities. By 1865, Parkersburg had become a major military depot for Union forces fighting in the American Civil War. After the war ended, many veterans returned to their homes in Parkersburg and its surrounding areas. The community experienced rapid growth until World War II when it declined rapidly due to wartime austerity measures. However, since thenParkersburg has been experiencing significant revitalization with new development announced recently including a major mixed-use project called River Square which will include an arena, hotel and other commercial buildings on top of a riverfront park that will be home to several public schools and apartments.
