Agriculture includes raising livestock and crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton, potatoes and tobacco; while commerce includes trade with surrounding states and international partners. The city includes a variety of historic districts including First National Bank Building (1819), State Capitol (1827), Merchants Exchange building (1829), Presbyterian Church (1834) and BaptistChurch (1895). Parkersburg is known for its architecture which has influenced many aspects of American life since its founding. Some famous architects include McKim Mead & White who designed the State Capitol and White House; Robert Mills who designed two blocks of downtown; Asher Hovey who designed several buildings within the Central Business District; Milton Bradley who designed two blocks east of town on Main Street; Edward Kimballdesigned four blocks north on Pennsylvania Avenue between 10th Street and 12th Street ;and Philip Johnson whose design for One Liberty Plaza has been criticized but still popular among visitors.

In 1819, Jackson and his fellow Americans captured the town of Martinsburg from the British. The American military victory at Fort Donelson led to a new era of American expansion. After Fort Donelson, Jackson ordered General Andrew Jackson's "Eighth Corps" to march on Parkersburg in order to capture supplies for the army being sent against General Robert E. Lee in Virginia. On October 8, 1825, after weeks of hard fighting, the Americans took Parkersburg without any resistance from the defenders. The town was renamed West Virginia in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped lead the American forces during the Battle of Gettysburg two years earlier. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee attempted to cross over into Kentucky through Union-occupied Tennessee, he was met with overwhelming southern Resistance by Union soldiers and civilians alike numbering in the thousands across what is now West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. As a result of this battle and others like it throughout America during that time period known as The Civil War (1861-1865), much history has been made about Parkersburg and its people over time - both good and bad!
The town of Parkerstown, West Virginia was founded in 1819 by George Washington and his family. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. In 1830, the first school was built in the town and it served as a center for education for residents of surrounding villages. The town post office was established in 1836 and soon became a stop on mail routes between Pittsburgh and Delaware City. By 1840, Parkerstown had a population of about 200 people. In 1849, the first railroad arrived in Scott County and Parkerstown quickly became an important rail junction. About this time, some settlers began to clear land for farming near the canal mouth so that they could export crops to Pittsburgh. This led to increased traffic on the canal and more businesses were established inParkerstown. In 1860, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village which named itself after President James Buchanan. In 1865, Union soldiers sacked the town during their raid into Scott County looking for Confederate arms caches hidden among civilians. Some stores were burned down and much property was destroyed including several homes of prominent citizens such as John Denton who rebuilt his home using stone from nearby Fort Pitts artillery battery. The damage done by Union forces is estimated at $250,000 dollars which would have been more than what was ever paid back to landowners within days following their raids followed by looting that stripped away any assets not already claimed by looters within weeks or months afterwards according to one report (Ulysses S Grant). In 1870-71, local farmers formed a wheat trust with help from Pennsylvania investors which resulted in high profits for those farms due to good soil conditions and efficient irrigation systems installed since early 1800s throughout Appalachia; however prices dropped drastically during World War I because imported food became scarce due to strategic Allied bombing campaigns against German cities while American agricultural production remained Unchanged overall despite increased competition from other countries especially Europe during this time period). After World War I ended there continued strong demand for wheat products but also lower prices as world economies stabilized resulting in large stockpiles across many countries around 1948 although some exports did continue until 1973 when grain prices peaked again globally
