Parkersburg, West Virginia is a town in the U.S. state of Virginia and the county seat of McDowell County. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston, WV–OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that now makes up Parkerstown was first settled by Scotsmen in 1775 as part of a larger group who took up arms against George Washington during the Whiskey Rebellion. The town was founded on anual grant from Lord Dunmore and named for General James "Pa" Kempton, one of the heroes of the Battle of Saratoga which ended with British victory over American forces in 1814. In 1819, Parkerstown became an incorporated village when it joined Fairfax County. In 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early occupied Parkersburg after its capture from Union troops at Second Manassas Junction near modern-day Lynchburg, Va.; he had been ordered to march through West Virginia on his way to join Maj.-Gen Rebel Iverson's army in Maryland Campaign; but upon learning that Johnston's army was moving through West Virginia he reversed course and halted at Parkersburg instead. Union forces under Major-General Gideon Welles arrived at Parkersburg on July 2nd and made their approach to town while cannon were being fired into the air to simulate battle conditions; however no battle occurred as Early retreated towards Richmond unopposed before wellesley could arrive on time It wasn't until 1862 when Union forces moved into present-day McDowell County (then known as Monongalia County) after successful operations against Confederate general Robert E Lee around Petersburg (now Petersburg),Virginia that Parkersburg began to experience increased development due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Richmond and Washington D.C.. A railroad station was built here in 1866 which helped bring more people and goods into town; also located here were some early factories manufacturing items such as coal mines, pottery kilns and pianos Manufacturing shifted from agriculture to industry following World War I when parkerstown lost its importance as a rail junction because new roads were built linking Richmond with points south In 1920s post office moved out 1 block east across street from current building back then called Post Office Depot
