Parkersburg is a small town in West Virginia that straddles the Ohio River. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census. It is located in Hampshire County and part of Huntington County. The cornerstone was laid by President Rutherford B Hayes on November 15, 1877; and since then, every year on Washington's Birthday (April 14), park visitors have been able to enjoy a day or two at Montpelier Courthouse before returning home to their families and neighborhoods around town. The first settler in the town was James Bickerton. In 1828, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of a school in Parkersburg. The school opened its doors to students on February 14, 1830. On November 15, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee arrived at Fort Pickens and ordered all Unionist residents of Parkersburg to leave by order of Confederate General Pierre Gillem. Many people refused to leave and were killed or captured. On May 8, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Fort Pickens and ordered all remaining Confederate soldiers who had not evacuated their homes to be burned alive by artillery fire. About 400 women and children 720 men were also killed during this event known as the Battle of Petersburg Heights. The town of Parkersburg grew rapidly from its founding until it peaked during World War II when it had a population of around 3800 people living in 348 homes. However, due to economic conditions within the war-torn country following the defeat of Nazi Germany, many people left for safer havens such as California and other parts of North America; eventually leaving behind an empty town with few if any physical reminders that Parkersburg once existed beyond its namesake community in Randolph County east of Charleston (now West Virginia). However, some vestige remains from both early history and wartime development still extant today including several businesses located near downtown which serve as local landmarks or tourist attractions – most notably TheJoshuaParkerHouseGardening & Storage facility which overlooks downtown Parkersburg on US Route 293 just west of I-81 Exit 191B off I-81 exit road northbound service area; also operated by descendants are two small cemeteries located adjacent to each other on either side of main street - one being called "Old FtPickens" erected around 1800 while another more recent name reflecting current times is "Gateway Cemetery".
