Parkersburg is a town in Wise County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wise County. Parkersburg is located on the Ohio River and has a total area of 27 square miles (79 km²). The first permanent settler in what became Parkersburg was David Denny in 1792. Denny owned land east of present-day Parkersburg on the Ohio River. He named his new community after George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1814, General James K. Polk established Fort Donelson as part of an effort to quash any Indian attacks along the river corridor between Cincinnati and points southward. The fort served as a base for operations during this time and also served as a point of entry into West Virginia for settlers seeking to avoid military duty in Illinois or Missouri during the War Between the States. In 1818, Congress passed an act providing for creation of two counties within Wise County - Greenup and Blair - based on land sales made by Daniel Boone during his exploration and survey of central Appalachia in 1815-16. On February 5, 1819, when Blairsville was incorporated as a separate village from Greenup County only days after its incorporation into Wise County under similar legislation by US Senator John Cranch In 1840, James Hancey donated land near present-day Parkersburg to become known as "The Hancey tract." The tract included much of what now makes up downtown Parkersburg adjacent to an old train depot from which trains ran to Wheeling, WV until 1971 when it closed down due to budget cuts by Amtrak. At that time many businesses located here still operated out doors like gas stations which are still open today despite being boarded up inside since then Later that year Congressman William Seward organized a group called "The Western Reserve Company" with some investors who invested money in developing what would become Pittsburgh through railroad development westward including purchase of land north-west of Pittsburgh along both sides of the Allegheny Mountains including most notably McKees Rocks where later Forbes Rubber Company was built In 1850 alterations were made to Fort Donelson which moved its cannons onto higher ground making it less vulnerable to artillery fire from downstream rapids such as those present day Boones Ferry Road Bridge over Beaver Dam Creek just north east across from present day Downtown Parkersburg . This event helped make Fort Donelson one of America's landmarks with subsequent visits by Presidents Ulysses S Grant (1865), Abraham Lincoln (1871), Franklin D Roosevelt (1933) all occasions celebrated annually at TheFortDonnaelson Museum adjacent to current day Downtown Parkersburg .
