Many people moved into this area during this time including John Crouch who bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land along scenicriver below its confluence withthe Big Sandy River in 1818 for $2 per acre ($/hectare). This parcel would remain parkland until it was purchased by George Washington Carver for $10 per acre ($/hectare) in 1890 when he donated his entire 560-acre (250 hectare) holdings near present-day North Main Street and Ironton Avenue to the city of Parkersburg as part of its Mural History Program . In 1907, William Sennett laid out South Main Street which runs through much of downtown Parkersburg while First National Bank building still stands across Market Street from current day State Capitol Complex . On July 4th 1908 United States Post Office opened at 5th & Elm Streets with mail processing facilities existing on present day Main Street north of State Capitol complex . The original Post office building still stands today as does First National Bank Building which served as both Post office and bank until 1933 when it closed after being destroyed by fire . The City Council website says that “On November 3rd 1889 City Council voted unanimously to purchase 560 acres (250 hectare) adjacent to North Main Street and Ironton Avenue from George Washington Carver for less than $10 per acre (. $/.025 par value). This land had been donated by William Sennett for mural history programming purposes” Although this date appears to be incorrect it does appear thatCity Council did vote on November 3rd 1889 although no such record exists
