Parkersburg is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 6,890 at the 2010 census. Parkersburg is the seat of Mingo County and the main city of the Parkersburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first residents of what would become Parkersburg settled on Whiteoak Creek in 1794. They were led by Colonel George Washington Marshall and his party as they explored the area. The first post office in what became Parkersburg was established in 1800, and remained open until 1847. In 1814, General James Armistead Kearny moved his army from Fayetteville to move against Lafayette's forces at Monongalia River Bridge over which Indian Chief Wyandotte had bridge himself; Kearny's column was repulsed and his army retreated back into West Virginia. In 1828, Colonel John Cranch erected a log stockade around what would become downtown Parkersburg to protect it from Comanche Indians who were raiding nearby settlements. This fortifications served as a model for later military posts around the country. The townspeople built two more stockades in 1829-30 and again in 1836-37 after a Apache attack destroyed one of these defensive barriers near Presbyterian College (now West Virginia University). The Town Council adopted an ordinance authorizing town meetings on December 12, 1840, when it was discovered that no village meeting had been held since November 4th due to inadequate seating accommodations at Lancaster Hall (later known as First Baptist Church). A meeting was called for January 14th but because there were only 10 men present all issues were postponed until next year when there would be 11 members present with three commissioners chosen by popular vote instead of council members who represented just themselves and their families plus one commissioner chosen by President Van Buren on July 1st 1840 which increased representation from six to ten citizens per member giving rise to what is now known as "the democratic process." On July 7th 1840 Union soldiers burned down Lancaster Hallrotation Inn located about half way between Market House Square on Main Street east of Yorktown Road across frompresent day Wilson High School while county officials were attending a wedding at that location attended by West Virginians Robert Eads Wilkinson Surry Randolph Middleton Daniel Boone Wyatt Earp John Reynolds both Confederate generals under command of Stonewall Jackson leading up to battle during August 1861 Confederate Invasion of VA lootings throughout VA leaving behind over 100 cannons including many captured rifles 2500 horses & mules many stores looted along with food supplies & munitions being abandoned right near where Union Soldiers burned down Lancaster Hallcrossing onto Hardeman’s Ford some 20 miles northwesterly past Manassas Junction before retreating back into Richmond Virginia
