In 1811, Anna Mosely moved to what is now Parkersburg from Ohio with her husband Daniel and their six children. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking Green River which they named "Mingo". Anna died in 1824 and Daniel continued to live there until his death in 1830. His widow married Nicholas Gossett and they removed to Kentucky where he worked as a surveyor before returning to live with them near Parkersburg in 1834. They had seven more children – four boys and three girls – before Nicholas' death in 1861 aged 85 years old. Their only daughter Nannie then took over the family home which she still resides in today east of downtown Parkersburg Anna Mosely's husband Daniel erected a new brick courthouse on Main Street between State Route 136 (now US 12) and SR 138 about two miles south of their original cabin during 1825-26 as part of an effort to provide justice for all citizens within Mingo County Some time after this courthouse was built local resident Elijah Beall donated land extending along Main Street from present-day US 12 east past downtown Parkersburg towards Hendersonville about 0.5 miles northward to form Beall Field subsequent designation by West Virginia General Assembly asState Road 208A following its erection This road became known asBeall Avenue later . On December 5, 1825, a building fire destroyed the brick courthouse and many other buildings in the town. The town was rebuilt with a new courthouse and a number of other buildings. The town also began to grow around the supply of tobacco.
