In 1881, Parkersburg was the location of the first gun choke performed in America. The choke consisted of a leather strap with a loop at one end and a round object, such as a BB shell, stored in the other. The use of this choke allowed firearms to be operated more easily by using two hands. It remained an important part of American firearms until about 1920.

From this location, Parkerburg played an essential role in helping to build up what would become West Virginia during the Revolutionary War. In 1801, after a period of growth and transformation, Parkerstown attained its current form as a city with a population of over 50,000 residents. Today, Parkersburg remains an important player in both local and statewide politics; it is also home to many major businesses and cultural attractions. Parkersburg is a census-designated place in West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Erie,West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Washington and his family in 1792 as an agricultural community on the Allegheny River. The first post office was established in 1802. Parkersburg developed into a commercial center with several breweries and two banking institutions during the 19th century. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses and left the town with few assets to tourism or other economic development initiatives until after World War II when parkersburg attracted international attention for its iron ore production from its distinctive red sandstone hillsides. Parkersburg has since become known for its tourist attractions including two amusement parks, three golf courses, four theaters and five restaurants.
The first European to visit what is now Parkersburg was the French Huguenot missionary, Jacques Marquette in 1795. He called it "Petersburg" after his patron saint, Peter. The town was founded by James Robertson on May 10, 1827 as a result of the Harrison Purchase. It became an incorporated community on January 1, 1868.
