On January 20, 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell made his retreat from Fort Donelson after successful resistance against Union forces near Nashville Tennessee, he passed through Mingo County on his way south to join Confederate General James Longstreet at upriver Mobile Alabama for an invasion of southern Georgia. On February 12th 1861 United States Brigadier-General Wade Hampton learned about this movement and ordered Colonel Wm Harker to march his brigade from Huntington to protect eastern Kentucky bridges across the Ohio River which could not be defended if Mobile reached them first; however Hannamstow did not believe that Mobile would attack so soon after crossing the river (Hannamstow believed that ifMobile attacked then east Kentuckians would cross over) Accordingly Col Wm Harker’s Brigade fell back upon Greeneville where they engaged Major-General Albert Sidney Johnston’s army under Lieutenant-Governor Richard Butler which resulted in two killed and ten wounded before withdrawing towards Harrisonburg where they abandoned their horses while trying to get across Overton’s Bridge; finally reaching Harrisonburg just as Union troops arrived with artillery support.]] After secession Parkersburg quickly developed into one of the most important points of importance for Confederates during their war with Unionism. The key role played by Parkersburg will continue long after both sides have ceased hostilities; especially given that much property changed hands following the war due to Reconstruction efforts led by President Ulysses S Grant

He hired hard workers and gave them good wages so that they could support their families. Over time, Fenton's investments paid off - the town grew quickly and developed strong infrastructure such as schools, churches, businesses and housing."
