Bullets in Parkersburg, West Virginia have a long and significant history. The first bullets were created in 1868 when the United States Patent Office granted a patent to Rufus W. Hunt for his improved rimfire rifle cartridge. Hunt’s bullet was designed to shot through leather at up to 100 yards. In 1875, Parkersburg resident George Stephenson invented the first practical handgun, the Walker Rifle. The rifle fired a round that could be fired from a pistol grip with one hand while holding an unloaded weapon with the other hand. In 1903, George Stephenson donated his gun barrel and cylinder to Parkersburg City Hall for use as the city’s first Mayor-County Court building Bullets continued to play an important role in Parkersburg until 1870 when they were replaced by firearms such as pistols and shotguns. After World War II ended, much of the city's business declined but has since recovered somewhat due to its location close to several large shopping malls and other cultural attractions
