Some families returned home after devastating war conditions prevailed in their region; others moved permanently to new locations such as Parkersburg. In 1875, western Kanawha County was organized from portions of Logan County and Parkersburg became its capital city. By 1920, Parkersburg had become an agricultural center with a population of over 100,000 people living on 10 square miles (25 km2). A period of economic prosperity followed during World War II which led to increased manufacturing activity around town including aircraft production at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and steel production at Mahanoy Mines Company Limited. However, by 1951 parkerstown's growth had slowed down significantly due to high levels of unemployment rates among its residents during that decade During the late 1960s through early 1970s there were several indications that Parkersburg may experience significant redevelopment if support could be found within government There were also reports that industrial companies were considering moving their headquarters out-of-State because they felt they could not compete with larger metropolitan areas in Pennsylvania or Ohio However these plans never materialized The last major development which would have an impact on parkerstown occurred in 1992 when a group consisting primarily of business owners announced plans for a $10 million dollar shopping mall which would develop adjacent land known as "The Lakes". This project never came to fruition but it signified another attempt by developers interested in redeveloping parkersburg into an attractive community
By 1800, the Potomac River was a thriving economic and cultural center for much of the Appalachian Mountains. The area now known as Parkersburg was first settled in 1781 by Scottish farmers. By 1820, the town had grown to include a small population of about 100 people. In 1827, the town became part of Jackson County, West Virginia. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Parkersburg sustained heavy damage from Confederate artillery fire. Despite this damage, it remained an important stop on the Union transport network until 1865. In that year, it rejoined Jackson County and became the capital of West Virginia.
