Morgantown is a town in Wood County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wood County and home to the Morgantown Mall. It is also the location of Marshall University. The first post office in Morgantown was established on July 9, 1881. The present post office building was built in 1922 and contains a gift from Preston Waddell which includes an addition to house the mail room and other services for the townspeople. The name of the original post office was reported as "Wadsworth". Morgantown became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1907. On November 15, 1912, it amended its charter to read: "Morgantown incorporation." In 1928, when Wood County was created from portions of Buchanan and Monongalia counties, Morgantown became one of its wards with a population of 2,000 residents. At that time it had two schools – one high school (grades 8-12) and one elementary school (grades 1-6). In 1936 it annexed part of neighboring Uniontown which had a population then numbering 3200 people but by 1960 only had 100 residents remaining within its boundaries; this annexation created what are now known as Park Avenue in Uniontown and Park Road in Morgantown. In 1951–1952 representatives from both towns met at Marshall University to discuss plans for further consolidation into one community with equal representation among all facets of society including government service providers like fire departments etc., however no action resulted from this meeting; instead development began closer to downtown where apartments were being built. On January 24th 1957 voters approved another amendment to their charter which granted city status making Morganton headquarters for all local government functions commonwealth level including planning/development/ finances etc.; additionally voting privileges were given tolder positions on township boards The annexation process continued until October 1957 when Park Avenue in Uniontown merged into Morgan Boulevard while Park Road merger happened east of Main Street between Arcola Drive & Waynesboro Boulevard becoming known as Southpark Boulevard. By 1977 there remained only rural land within town boundaries with a total population under 2000 residents
